The family of a woman murdered by her partner in a remote forest cabin on the NSW Mid North Coast says the lies of her killer will never be forgiven or forgotten.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In July, 42-year-old Rohen James Hanson was found guilty of murdering Dee Annear<\/a> on September 18, 202, during a camping trip to a remote logger’s hut in Bulga Forest, two hours west of Port Macquarie.<\/p>\n

Ms Annear’s body was found outside the cabin with skull, rib, jaw and nose fractures, lung lacerations and a strangulation injury.<\/p>\n

An autopsy report found she died from blunt force trauma.<\/p>\n

During a sentence hearing on Friday in the Supreme Court in Newcastle, the court heard a victim impact statement written by Ms Annear’s brother Dean Butt on behalf of the family.<\/p>\n

In his statement, Mr Butt said Ms Annear had “no hate in her heart” and wrote of his sister’s resilience and strength.<\/p>\n

“Dee was the strongest of us all. The world was a better place with Dee in it,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Butt wrote of how his sister’s murder had taken happiness from their family, who had been “dragged through court for four years and lied to about this unforgivable act.”<\/p>\n

“To Rohen Hanson: you’ll never be forgiven and this will never be forgotten,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

During the trial, Hanson initially told first responders and police in an initial interview that Ms Annear had sustained her injuries in a car crash 3.5 kilometres away from the cabin.<\/p>\n

But in a second police interview three days after her death, Hanson admitted this was a lie <\/a>and that the two had gotten into a physical argument the night she died, during which he had tackled her into a wall.<\/p>\n

Chief Justice Ian Harrison said that while Hanson was not on trial for telling lies, he “would have considerable difficulty believing anything he said” in relation to the events at the remote cabin.<\/p>\n

“Apart from the fact that Ms Annear was killed and Mr Hanson killed her, there’s almost nothing that I could say occurred, or in what order it happened,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Defence barrister Peter Krisenthal said while Hanson’s first police interview was “nonsense,” his second interview was largely consistent with what police found at the scene.<\/p>\n

Mr Kristenthal described Hanson’s actions as a “spontaneous explosion” and said his client had real regret for his actions.<\/p>\n

He told the court the sentence needed to consider the abuse and alienation Hanson suffered as a child, his history of substance abuse, as well as his unstable and volatile intimate relationships.<\/p>\n

“When he’s released from custody, he won’t be a young man,” Mr Krisenthal said. \u00a0<\/p>\n

But Crown prosecutor Carl Young said the case was a very serious example of domestic violence murder.<\/p>\n

He argued that a strangulation injury sustained by the victim was consistent with a chainsaw pull cord found in the cabin being wrapped around Ms Annear’s neck with sufficient force.<\/p>\n

Justice Harrison agreed that his distinct impression from the trial was that the injury to Ms Annear’s neck could only have been caused by an application of force using the chainsaw pull cord.<\/p>\n

Mr Young said the strangulation injury, in combination with fractures to her skull, jaw, ribs and nose, pointed to Hanson intending to kill her in a severe assault and should be factored into his sentence.<\/p>\n

“General deterrence has a significant role to play,” Mr Young said.<\/p>\n
