Congress<\/a> passed a resolution on Friday that condemns the \u201cviolent riots\u201d in Los Angeles, referring to the demonstrations that broke out<\/a> earlier this month amid the Trump administration\u2019s ramped-up immigration enforcement efforts in Southern California<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Led by Rep. Young Kim<\/a>, R-Anaheim Hills, and the rest of California\u2019s Republican House delegation, the resolution said<\/a> protests \u201cquickly escalated into violent riots across Los Angeles, where acts of arson, widespread looting, property destruction, and vandalism were committed, blocking streets and highways, lighting streets on fire, throwing rocks at law enforcement vehicles, and assaulting federal and local peace officers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeaceful protests are a constitutional right, but vandalism, looting, violence and other crimes are not,\u201d Kim said, adding that her resolution is an effort to \u201csupport law and order as our communities see unrest enabled by California\u2019s soft-on-crime policies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Only seven Democrats<\/a> voted for the resolution on Friday, June 27, including California Reps. Jim Costa of Fresno and Adam Gray of Merced.<\/p>\n

The other five were Reps. Henry Cuellar of Texas, Don Davis of North Carolina, Laura Gillen of New York, Jared Golden of Maine and Tom Suozzi of New York.<\/p>\n

Gray said the resolution<\/a> is \u201cfar from perfect\u201d and has \u201cno real force of law\u201d but expresses the sentiment \u201cthat Congress is grateful for the first responders and public safety officers who keep us safe day in and day out.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he wants to see support for a similar resolution<\/a> led by Rep. Nanette Barrag\u00e1n, D-Carson, that expresses support for peaceful and lawful protests while also condemning President Donald Trump\u2019s deployment of troops to Southern California<\/a> amid his immigration efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me be clear: I condemn recent ICE raids throughout California that are causing fear across the Valley,\u201d Gray said. \u201cThere are ways to fix our immigration system, but these terror-inducing raids are not one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other Democratic lawmakers who represent Southern California, though, rejected the resolution and admonished it.<\/p>\n

The resolution \u201cis not about public safety. It is about fear,\u201d said Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is about scapegoating immigrants. And it is about gaslighting the American people into believing that Los Angeles is some so-called \u2018hellscape,\u2019\u201d Kamlager-Dove said. \u201cThis resolution ignores the fact that the violence didn\u2019t start in a vacuum. It was sparked by the Trump administration\u2019s provocative, aggressive raids across the state.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, called the resolution \u201cintentionally divisive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEarlier this month, our state and local law enforcement officers in Los Angeles worked admirably to provide a safe environment so Americans could exercise their First Amendment right to protest,\u201d Levin said. \u201cI wholeheartedly condemn those who took advantage of the situation to commit violent acts, and I stand with our state and local law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe resolution we voted on today,\u201d Levin continued, \u201cuses inflammatory language designed to divide us instead of bringing people together. We should be focused on bipartisan solutions that strengthen public safety and protect civil rights, not on partisan exercises that inflame tensions and pit communities against each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Corona, said the House showed by passing the resolution that it is \u201cstanding up for and thanking our law enforcement officers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no room for riots and other violence in our streets,\u201d Calvert said.<\/p>\n

Protests have broken out around Southern California \u2014 and the country \u2014 this month in opposition to the Trump administration\u2019s immigration enforcement efforts.<\/p>\n

That includes a \u201cNo Kings Day of Defiance\u201d protest that drew thousands of demonstrators in the Inland Empire<\/a> and thousands more to Orange County<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those June 14 \u201cNo Kings\u201d rallies were mostly peaceful, although some violence and arrests did occur<\/a>. In Los Angeles, nearly four dozen people were arrested in downtown L.A.<\/p>\n

Protests have continued in Los Angeles, mainly centered in the downtown<\/a> and south L.A.<\/a> neighborhoods, as well as in Pasadena<\/a> and Pico Rivera<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass instituted a curfew for the downtown region<\/a> for several days, an effort she said was for \u201censuring safety, stability and support in the downtown neighborhoods.\u201d While most demonstrations had remained mostly peaceful, police and city officials said that some gatherings turned destructive after dark, with looting and vandalism blamed on \u201cbad actors.\u201d<\/p>\n
