(Channel 9)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He told the court the time his client would spend on remand could exceed a future sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s likely that the matter could run for 12 months before being heard,&#8221; Mr Hopkins said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He rejected claims that Sunday&#8217;s incident was a racially-motivated attack, saying witness statements had only been taken from victims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s quite evident that Mr Sewell has been overcharged and we would submit that a lot of these charges would be ordered into a narrower field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The prosecutor told the court that the maximum penalties for some of Sewell&#8217;s charges were between five and 10 years, arguing his time on remand was unlikely to exceed his sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is a serious example of violent disorder with that aggravating feature and I submit there is ample circumstantial evidence that this was racially motivated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bald man with a brown moustache is confronted by several men in a playground.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757060833_828_efb3d132719044158596b3d469f1d1fc\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">On the morning of his arrest, Thomas Sewell gatecrashed a press conference and heckled Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan.\u00a0 (AAP: Callum Godde)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Magistrate Donna Bakos refused to grant bail to Sewell, telling the court she believed there was a risk he would endanger the safety and welfare of another person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The magistrate also raised concerns that Sewell would interfere with witnesses or otherwise obstruct the course of justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I understand there is video footage of these events,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I find the prosecution case in the Camp Sovereignty matter to be strong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She also told the court people had the right to go about their lives without being confronted by hateful speech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Sewell was supported by about a dozen of his followers as he faced court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Earlier this week, Detective Senior Constable Saer Pascoe told the court that Sewell should be refused bail because he posed an unacceptable risk to the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The applicant&#8217;s behaviour in recent times has been escalating in violence and concerning behaviour,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Charges laid over Anzac Day disruption<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Police have charged one of Mr Sewell&#8217;s associates over booing at the Anzac Day dawn service in Melbourne earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The event was <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-25\/melbourne-anzac-day-welcome-to-country-hecklers\/105215124\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105215124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disrupted during a Welcome to Country address<\/a>, when members of the crowd began to jeer and heckle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some hecklers demanded the Welcome to Country be stopped, but were drowned out by applause from the rest of the gathered crowd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A 23-year-old Mooroolbark man was arrested on Tuesday and has been charged with behaving in an offensive manner, offending against decency and taking part in a disturbance.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Victoria Police confirmed the man was arrested alongside Thomas Sewell outside the Melbourne Magistrates&#8217;
