{"id":202167,"date":"2025-09-05T11:25:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T11:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/202167\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T11:25:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T11:25:11","slug":"forastera-explores-family-trauma-on-a-vacation-hit-by-tragedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/202167\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Forastera&#8217; Explores Family Trauma On a Vacation Hit by Tragedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA bucolic summer vacation is transformed by tragedy in Forastera, the debut feature from Spanish director Luc\u00eda Ale\u00f1ar Iglesias.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe evocative drama, which premieres in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/tiff-2024-discovery-lineup-chloe-sevigny-bonjour-tristesse-1235956344\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TIFF\u2019s Discovery section<\/a> for first- and second-time directors, is set during a fateful sun-soaked vacation on Mallorca.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSpanish director Luc\u00eda Ale\u00f1ar Iglesias\u2019 debut movie Forastera evolves around 16-year-old Cata (Spanish newcomer Zoe Stein) who, after the sudden loss of her beloved grandmother, steps into her role in an attempt to lessen her and her family\u2019s grief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCata and her sister Eva (Martina Garc\u00eda) are spending a carefree summer at their grandparents\u2019 house in Mallorca when suddenly their beloved grandmother Catalina (Marta Angelat) dies, and their innocent holiday, as well as this movie, takes a tragic turn. Grandfather Tomeu (Llu\u00eds Homar) is crippled with grief. When Cata tries on one of her grandma\u2019s vintage dresses, she finds herself slipping into the role of emotional caretaker, inhabiting the role Catalina played in the family. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn an exclusive first teaser for the film (watch below), Cata stands just outside the family home, gazing silently at grandfather Tomeu (played by legendary Spanish actor Llu\u00eds Homar (Broken Embraces, Bad Education)).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIglesias expanded her eponymous short film for this feature debut, which was inspired both by ghost stories and tales of endless summers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m interested in the ways in which we project our deceased onto places, objects and especially onto other people,\u201d the director said in a statement. \u201cWhether conscious of it or not, grief can open us to new and eerie ways of keeping our loved ones around for longer. Cata mourns the loss of her grandmother by assimilating her persona, getting lost in her spirit, or at least Cata\u2019s interpretation of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe project was developed in part through the Cannes Film Festival\u2019s Critics\u2019 Week Next Step program for up-and-coming directors.
