I started noticing his stutter started to come back, but I never in a million years thought that was a symptom of FTD,&#8221; Heming Willis told <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/how-bruce-willis-early-dementia-symptoms-impacted-marriage-wife-emma-exclusive-11802344\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:People;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">People<\/a> in an interview published Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Their relationship started to change, in part because they were having issues communicating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Conversations weren&#8217;t really aligning anymore, and our relationship started to shift. It was hard to put my finger on why and what was happening,&#8221; Heming Willis said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This led to a lot of frustration and made her question whether their relationship was failing, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I thought it was something I was doing in our marriage that was not working anymore,&#8221; Heming Willis said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It&#8217;s like you&#8217;re banging your head against a brick wall. You&#8217;re just like, &#8216;Where is the miscommunication coming? What is happening within our relationship?'&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Looking back, Heming Willis said her husband&#8217;s eventual diagnosis gave her clarity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;There was relief in understanding, &#8216;Oh, okay, this wasn&#8217;t my husband, it was that this disease was taking parts of his brain,'&#8221; Heming Willis said. &#8220;Once you hear that, I just softened.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In 2022, the &#8220;Die Hard&#8221; star stepped away from acting after he was <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/bruce-willis-stepping-away-from-acting-after-aphasia-diagnosis-2022-3?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:diagnosed with aphasia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">diagnosed with aphasia<\/a>. A year later, Willis&#8217; family announced that he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The condition mainly affects <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/bruce-willis-frontotemporal-dementia-ftd-what-cause-symptoms-aphasia-2023-2?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:personality and behavior;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">personality and behavior<\/a> or language and speech because of damage to the front or sides of the brain, Sebastian Crutch, professor of neuropsychology at UCL&#8217;s Dementia Research Centre, UK, told Business Insider in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Behavioral symptoms can include seeming insensitive or rude, and a loss of interest in people or activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In an interview with Diane Sawyer for the <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/Culture\/bruce-willis-wife-update-health-dementia-caregiving\/story?id=124879469\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:ABC special;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">ABC special<\/a> &#8220;Emma &amp; Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey,&#8221; which aired on August 26, Heming Willis said she had moved her husband to a separate one-story home nearby where he has round-the-clock care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She told Sawyer it was &#8220;one of the hardest decisions&#8221; she has ever had to make.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;But I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters.
