This season, Diggins is averaging 1.2 steals and 0.8 blocks per game\u2014numbers that don\u2019t just happen by chance. For a 5\u20199\u201d guard to be swatting shots at nearly a block a game is rare, but Diggins thrives on defying expectations. And while these defensive stats may be new career highs, they\u2019re also just a small part of the bigger picture: a veteran who\u2019s rewriting what\u2019s possible at the decade mark.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Even though she\u2019s ten years into playing in the W, 2025 has marked a lot of firsts for her. In July, she became the first player in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/life\/a64490663\/inside-wnba-draft-photos\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/life\/a64490663\/inside-wnba-draft-photos\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"WNBA\" data-node-id=\"2.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WNBA<\/a> history to record a triple-double (11 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists) while playing fewer than 25 minutes, and the first WNBA player to earn 15 assists in an All-Star Game. And her style of play? Bold. \u201cI\u2019ve never been shy to blaze my own trail,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">After excelling at Washington High School\u2014she was named Gatorade Athlete of the Year in 2009\u2014Diggins went on to Notre Dame, where she led the Fighting Irish to three consecutive Final Fours and two NCAA championship games. After her college career wrapped, she was drafted 3rd overall by the Tulsa Shock in the 2013 WNBA Draft where she quickly became a star; she made the All Rookie Team that year.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">While she was known to be fearless on the court, Diggins sought to push the envelope when she stepped off it, too. In her rookie year, she made history by becoming the first female athlete to sign with Roc Nation Sports, Jay-Z&#8217;s sports management agency. In 2017, Diggins took another major step by signing with PUMA. \u201cI signed with them before they even had a basketball shoe,\u201d she laughs. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">And before long, her professional moves started to become more personal. After the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a30768819\/skylar-diggins-smith\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a30768819\/skylar-diggins-smith\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"birth of her first child\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">birth of her first child<\/a>, she openly advocated along with other players for improved <a href=\"https:\/\/highposthoops.com\/2020\/02\/02\/wnba-skylar-diggins-smith-closed-mouths-dont-get-fed\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/highposthoops.com\/2020\/02\/02\/wnba-skylar-diggins-smith-closed-mouths-dont-get-fed\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"maternity protections in the WNBA\" data-node-id=\"10.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maternity protections in the WNBA<\/a>, paving the way for what became unofficially known as the \u201cSkylar Clause,\u201d which guarantees full salary during maternity leave. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">A mom of a 6-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter, Diggins says she experienced postpartum depression after both pregnancies. \u201cI thought about retiring\u2014I didn\u2019t feel motivated to leave my kids, especially my daughter,\u201d she says. \u201cBut the game really nursed me back to life, and it was so important for them to see me overcome those hurdles.\u201d <\/p>\n<blockquote data-theme-key=\"pullquote\" class=\"css-1pxfh3s e1pe3zr91\">\n<blockquote class=\"css-sh2zho e1pe3zr90\"><p>&#8220;The game really nursed me back to life.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Diggins isn\u2019t just looking ahead to the future though, she\u2019s actively defending it. She\u2019s joining forces with other veteran players to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/life\/a60535170\/wnba-salary-pay-gap\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/life\/a60535170\/wnba-salary-pay-gap\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"advocate for better pay\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advocate for better pay<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a64961661\/cheyenne-parker-tyus-pregnancy-wnba\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a64961661\/cheyenne-parker-tyus-pregnancy-wnba\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"improved maternity and parental benefits\" data-node-id=\"13.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improved maternity and parental benefits<\/a>, and enhanced resources for players both on and off the court through a CBA (or collective bargaining agreement). \u201cI\u2019m not negotiating the CBA for me\u2014it\u2019s for the up and coming players and future stars of our league,\u201d Diggins says. \u201cI stand alongside a lot of strong women who are fighting the good fight right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">This isn\u2019t pure talk\u2014those around her say they can feel it all taking root. \u201c[Sky] wants to be the thermostat, not the thermometer\u2014the thermometer tells you how hot or cold it is in the room, but the thermostat sets the temperature,\u201d 14th-year WNBA veteran and Storm forward Nneka Ogwumike told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenexthoops.com\/wnba\/seattle-storm\/skylar-diggins-smith-comfort-seattle-storm-scoring-ogwumike-quinn\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.thenexthoops.com\/wnba\/seattle-storm\/skylar-diggins-smith-comfort-seattle-storm-scoring-ogwumike-quinn\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"The IX Basketball.\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The IX Basketball.<\/a> \u201cOne thing that I love most about her is how she really just takes matters into her own hands in a way that makes her like the manifester of things.\u201d Ogwumike and Diggins aren\u2019t just teammates\u2014they\u2019ve been friends for nearly two decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2025\/may\/16\/storm-turn-to-nneka-ogwumike-skylar-diggins-in-pos\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2025\/may\/16\/storm-turn-to-nneka-ogwumike-skylar-diggins-in-pos\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"first crossing paths at USA Basketball invite-only junior camps from 2008 to 2011.\" data-node-id=\"14.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first crossing paths at USA Basketball invite-only junior camps from 2008 to 2011.<\/a> But last year marked the first time they shared a WNBA locker room in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Others at the top of the Storm organization understand her too: \u201cSky is a pulse in the way that she leads. It\u2019s always through action,\u201d Storm head coach Noelle Quinn told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2025\/may\/16\/storm-turn-to-nneka-ogwumike-skylar-diggins-in-pos\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2025\/may\/16\/storm-turn-to-nneka-ogwumike-skylar-diggins-in-pos\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"The Spokesman-Review\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Spokesman-Review<\/a>. And the next generation is taking note. To settle her mind, you\u2019ll sometimes find a comfort show playing in the background while she preps for a game. \u201cReality TV or a show I know well, like Martin,\u201d she says. <br data-node-id=\"18.5\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">And a lot of what she\u2019s learned from the game has helped her in this new phase of parenthood. \u201cThe words I\u2019d use to describe my defense on the court are energy, tenacity, and anticipation,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd once I get home, I need those same skills. I need the energy for my toddler, the tenacity for the hustle and bustle of being a single mama, and the anticipation to help manage my priorities while maintaining balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote data-theme-key=\"pullquote\" class=\"css-1pxfh3s e1pe3zr91\">\n<blockquote class=\"css-sh2zho e1pe3zr90\"><p>\u201cThe words I\u2019d use to describe my defense on the court are energy, tenacity, and anticipation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Besides, her biggest fans these days don\u2019t need to pay for tickets and ask for selfies. \u201cI get no pressure from them\u2014I\u2019m just mom. I don\u2019t even have to play well,\u201d she pauses. \u201cI don\u2019t even have to play, and I know how they feel about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">For Diggins, defense is more than a stat line\u2014it\u2019s a mindset. It\u2019s the energy she brings to the court, the tenacity she applies to challenges, and the anticipation that keeps her one step ahead, on and off the hardwood.
