Billionaire Bill Ackman<\/a> announced he is backing Andrew Cuomo in New York City\u2019s mayoral race \u2014 in a dramatic about-face after he previously endorsed Mayor Eric Adams, claiming the former New York governor did not have the energy to defeat surging socialist Zohran Mamdani<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cEric has been a charismatic and high-energy leader who has shown real empathy and provided critical moral and other support to NY communities in their time of need,\u201d the hedge fund titan\u00a0wrote in a late-night X post<\/a>\u00a0Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of that said, Eric should step aside and not run for reelection. Eric\u2019s polls have deteriorated substantially since the primary, and it has become increasingly clear that he does not have a chance to beat @ZohranKMamdani.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just two months ago, Ackman had endorsed Adams and called on Cuomo<\/a> to drop out of the race, claiming his \u201csubdued energy\u201d made it \u201cabundantly clear\u201d that the ex-governor \u201cis not up for the fight\u201d to take down Mamdani.<\/p>\n

But Ackman \u2014 who donated $500,000 to Cuomo\u2019s failed Democratic primary campaign \u2014 has perhaps sensed a change in the wind\u00a0just 60 days before Election Day.<\/p>\n

The latest polls have Adams lagging in the single digits \u2014 down from the mid-teens around the time of the primary, in which he failed to muster any meaningful support as his corruption scandals\u00a0still loomed large<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cuomo, meanwhile, is polling in the mid- to high 20s while front-runner Mamdani\u2019s support has stalled in the high 30s to low 40s.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a lot that needs to be improved in New York City. @andrewcuomo is an experienced leader that cares deeply about our city who has the relevant experience and skills necessary to lead and greatly improve NYC,\u201d Ackman said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAndrew had major accomplishments as our governor. He also made some mistakes. I am a huge believer in backing leaders who have learned from their mistakes and have something to prove,\u201d he said\u00a0in apparent reference to Cuomo\u2019s sexual assault allegations that\u00a0forced him out of the governor\u2019s office in 2021<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Cuomo has denied the allegations.<\/p>\n

Ackman acknowledged that Adams has done a \u201cgood job\u201d leading the Big Apple, noting the city\u2019s strong economy, declining crime and his handling of the migrant crisis \u2014 but he believes Cuomo is best suited to \u201cwin in a two-horse race with Adams\u2019 help\u201d from the sidelines.<\/p>\n

\u201cMayor Adams, it is time for you to play a critical role in NYC\u2019s future by gracefully stepping aside to enable Andrew to win,\u201d Ackman said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will all be eternally grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n

White House officials have been discussing potentially giving Adams a plush gig in the Trump administration, including a possible ambassadorship, to get him out of the mayoral race as his polling numbers plummeted, The Post learned this week.<\/p>\n

A source in the mayor\u2019s orbit confirmed his team has pushed him to take the position \u2014 but Adams does not seem ready to throw in the towel yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a job. I\u2019m running for re-election, I\u2019m still doing that and I\u2019m looking forward to getting re-elected,\u201d Adams said at an unrelated press conference Wednesday when asked about the rumors.<\/p>\n
