{"id":202806,"date":"2025-09-05T16:54:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T16:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/202806\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T16:54:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T16:54:14","slug":"why-trump-is-targeting-boston-and-its-democratic-mayor-as-part-of-his-immigration-enforcement-blitz-boston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/202806\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Trump is targeting Boston and its Democratic mayor as part of his \u2018immigration enforcement blitz\u2019 | Boston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tensions between Michelle Wu, the mayor of Boston, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump administration<\/a> have been escalating in recent months over the administration\u2019s aggressive immigration policies, with reports now signaling the possibility of a federal immigration enforcement surge in the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The friction came to a head last week when the Trump administration reportedly began preparing an \u201cimmigration enforcement blitz\u201d for Boston in the coming weeks, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/08\/29\/trump-admin-plans-immigration-enforcement-surge-in-boston-00536276\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The report, which cited unnamed current and former administration officials, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcboston.com\/news\/local\/boston-follows-the-law-mayor-wu-responds-to-report-of-planned-ice-surge\/3799776\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prompted a swift rebuke<\/a> from Wu, who has in recent months become a vocal defender of sanctuary laws and immigrant protections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cUnlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law \u2013 city, state and federal,\u201d Wu said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MayorWu\/posts\/unlike-the-trump-administration-boston-follows-the-lawlocal-state-and-federalthe\/791123140088049\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>. \u201cWe are the safest major city in the country because all of our community members know that they are part of how we keep the entire community safe. Stop attacking cities to hide your administration\u2019s failures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This standoff has been steadily building since March when Wu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/politics\/live-updates\/boston-mayor-wu-testifies-before-congress-on-immigration-policies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">testified<\/a> before Congress alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/boston-chicago-denver-nyc-sanctuary-mayors-to-be-held-publicly-accountable-on-march-5\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three other Democratic mayors<\/a> to defend their cities\u2019 immigration policies \u2013 specifically so-called sanctuary city laws that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/30\/donald-trump-sanctuary-cities\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">limit state and local law enforcement cooperation<\/a> with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Supporters of the laws, including local leaders and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/118\/meeting\/house\/116200\/witnesses\/HHRG-118-JU01-Wstate-BatistaR-20230713.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">police chiefs<\/a> in jurisdictions that have them, argue that these measures can help build trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement. Some studies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/118\/meeting\/house\/116200\/documents\/HHRG-118-JU01-20230713-SD003.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found<\/a> that crime rates tend to be lower in sanctuary counties compared with those without such protections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Critics of these policies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/22\/us\/sanctuary-cities-trump-immigration.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claim<\/a> that sanctuary laws undermine federal law enforcement\u2019s ability to arrest and deport individuals with criminal records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">So-called \u201csanctuary cities\u201d have become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/30\/donald-trump-sanctuary-cities\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a central target<\/a> of this Trump administration, as it pushes for mass deportations as part of its crackdown on immigration. In June, Pam Bondi, the US attorney general, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/14\/pam-bondi-sanctuary-cities-letter-immigration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sent letters <\/a>to 32 US mayors, including Wu, demanding they end their sanctuary policies or face cuts to federal funding and possible legal consequences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wu then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcboston.com\/news\/local\/deadline-for-bostons-response-to-federal-government-on-immigration-enforcement\/3792422\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issued a staunch<\/a> defense of Boston\u2019s policies in a letter to Bondi and in a subsequent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/19\/boston-sanctuary-cities-michelle-wu-trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">press conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe City of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/boston\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boston<\/a> is the safest major city in America,\u201d she wrote. \u201cOur progress is the result of decades of community policing and partnership between local law enforcement and community leaders, who share a commitment to making Boston a safe and welcoming home for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The progress, Wu said, was in part a result of the city\u2019s local laws, including the Boston Trust Act, which prohibits local police from engaging with federal immigration enforcement unless there is a criminal warrant and is \u201cfully consistent with federal law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOn behalf of the people of Boston, and in solidarity with the cities and communities targeted by this federal administration for our refusal to bow down to unconstitutional threats and unlawful coercion, we affirm our support for each other and for our democracy,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After Wu\u2019s remarks, the acting Ice director, Todd Lyons, said that the agency intended to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcboston.com\/news\/local\/ice-director-says-hell-flood-boston-after-mayor-wu-refuses-to-comply-with-feds\/3794197\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flood the zone<\/a>, especially in sanctuary jurisdictions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNow you\u2019re going to see more Ice agents come to Boston to make sure that we take these public threats out that she wants to let go back in the communities,\u201d he said, vowing to make \u201cAmerica safe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Patricia Hyde, Boston\u2019s acting Ice field office director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qL_BbCkvp_Q\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">echoed Lyons\u2019s sentiment<\/a>, warning that Ice was \u201cnot backing down\u201d and that \u201cthe men and women with Ice, unlike Mayor Wu\u201d, took an oath that they swore to uphold \u201cto protect the cities and communities where we work and where we live, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re gonna do, despite the obstacles\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wu fired back on <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/wutrain.bsky.social\/post\/3lwvss6ytj22v\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">social media<\/a> and said she took an oath to uphold the US constitution, noting that she was sworn in with her hand on a 1782 Aitken Bible \u201calso known as the Bible of the Revolution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As the threat of federal actions looms, Wu said last week that her administration was actively preparing for the possibility of a federal national guard deployment. Such a move would mirror recent actions by the Trump administration in both Washington DC and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The administration sent national guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/11\/trump-washington-dc-crime\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">troops to Washington<\/a> DC last month under the pretext of combating a supposed surge in violent crime \u2013\u00a0a claim that stands in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/11\/trump-washington-dc-crime-los-angeles\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contrast to the city\u2019s current crime data<\/a>. Earlier this summer, the administration also sent thousands of national guard troops to Los Angeles during protests against the administration\u2019s immigration crackdown, a move a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/02\/trumps-national-guard-troops-los-angeles-illegal\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">federal judge recently ruled<\/a> as unlawful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are following what\u2019s happening in other cities around the country very closely,\u201d Wu told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/news\/politics\/2025-08-26\/bostons-mayor-bracing-for-potential-national-guard-deployment\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GBH\u2019s Boston Public Radio<\/a> last week. \u201cUnfortunately, we have seen what it would look like if that should come to pass, and that this federal administration is willing to go beyond the bounds of constitutional authority and federal law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wu also said her administration was reviewing relevant legal precedents and working \u201cvery closely\u201d with community members \u201cto ensure people know what\u2019s happening and that this is not something that is needed or wanted or legally sound\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She added that \u201cin this moment, however we got here, every mayor of every major city is having to take preparations for the national guard coming in against their will\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wu\u2019s comments come as leaders in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/31\/jb-pritzker-trump-chicago-illinois\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other Democratic-led cities<\/a> around the country are also bracing for the possibility of national guard deployments or Ice surges in their communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Trump administration announced plans this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/31\/jb-pritzker-trump-chicago-illinois\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to ramp up immigration crackdowns and deploy federal agents<\/a> to Chicago, sparking strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/30\/chicago-mayor-executive-order-trump-immigration-raids\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">backlash from local leaders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Thursday, JB Pritzker, the Illinois governor, said he had been informed that expanded Ice operations would begin in and around Chicago this weekend, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/post\/national-guard-chicago-expanded-ice-operations-expected-start-saturday-governor-jb-pritzker-says\/17737342\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC News Chicago.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pritzker said earlier this week that he was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/local\/pritzker-deeply-concerned-about-ice-targeting-mexican-independence-day-events\/3818582\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deeply concerned<\/a>\u201c that Ice would target Mexican Independence Day celebrations on Saturday.
