Stephen Yang for the New York Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next step would have to be a formal conversation\u201d with the president, the source said.<\/p>\n<p>Adams\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/05\/us-news\/adams-defiantly-insists-hes-staying-in-nyc-mayoral-race-while-ripping-andrew-cuomo-zohran-mamdani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defiantly insisted Friday afternoon\u00a0<\/a>that\u00a0he was staying in the race amid the swirling chatter that he was considering dropping his likely doomed re-election bid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m running and I\u2019m going to beat [Zohran] Mamdani,\u201d he said outside Gracie Mansion, referring to the frontrunner socialist Democratic nominee.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor also issued a statement reiterating that\u00a0\u201cno formal offer had been made\u201d \u2013\u00a0an assertion confirmed by sources with knowledge of the conversations \u2013 but said he\u2019d take up the call to serve, if asked.<\/p>\n<p>The Adams campaign called an emergency meeting \u2013 prompting the cancelation of a mayoral event \u2013 that lasted more than an hour Friday morning amid the rumors that the Trump\u00a0administration was putting on the pressure in an attempt to create a one-on-one race between Mamdani and ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n<p>Staffers for the campaign and White House had a meeting pencilled in for Monday, but it could be pushed to later in the week due to scheduling. Trump is expected to attend the US Open in Queens on Sunday, and a Yankee game on Thursday, the anniversary of the\u00a0Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adams, during his fiery Gracie Mansion remarks, denied he\u2019d be headed to the nation\u2019s capital Monday.<\/p>\n<p>He ripped his rivals, Mamdani and Cuomo,\u00a0as \u201cspoiled brats\u201d born with silver spoons in their mouths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndrew Cuomo is a snake and a liar. I am in this race, and I\u2019m the only one who can beat Mamdani. Andrew has had a career of pushing black candidates out of races.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Post confirmed earlier Friday that Trump\u2019s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff \u2014 whom Adams met with in Florida earlier this week \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/05\/us-news\/top-trump-adviser-floats-eric-adams-for-saudi-arabia-ambassadorship-to-quiet-busy-ny-mayoral-field-give-cuomo-shot-to-beat-mamdani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was pushing for the president to nominate the mayor\u00a0<\/a>as the next ambassador to Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>The plan\u2019s seriousness remained unclear Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he want to be an ambassador? Sure, but that has to be appointed by the president and the president has not asked him,\u201d the source with knowledge of the White House meeting said, referring to one of the possible gigs being discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Adams has also fielded lucrative offers from influential business leaders, but he\u2019s currently not interested in exploring the private sector, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The political calculus behind the seemingly outside-the-box deal would have Adams end his independent re-election bid as a way to consolidate\u00a0Cuomo\u2019s support, giving him a leg up in beating\u00a0Mamdani in November.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, confirmed he views Cuomo as the best candidate to beat Mamdani, whom he disparaged as a \u201ccommunist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37030554\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/speaks-meta-ceo-mark-zuckerberg-110706713_40cb1c-edited.jpg\" alt=\"President Trump and Mark Zuckerberg at a White House dinner with tech leaders.\" class=\"wp-image-37030554\"  \/>\u201cEric Adams knows he can\u2019t win [in November] and is exploring his options,\u201d a source close to Adams told The Post. WILL OLIVER\/POOL\/EPA\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say that Cuomo might have a chance of winning if it was one-on-one,\u201d he said. \u201cIf it\u2019s not one on one, it\u2019s going to be a hard race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president said Adams is free to do what he wants, and denied offering the mayor an ambassadorship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with doing that, but I didn\u2019t do that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the job talks would require Adams to simply suspend his campaign or immediately resign his post at City Hall remained unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Adams finishing out his term would be a potential sticking point if the goal is to thwart Mamdani, as the only way the mayor would be taken off November\u2019s ballot under state law is if he steps down and moves out of New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Hizzoner is also wrestling with whether he would want to step away completely and bank his current campaign war chest for a future return to Democratic politics or enter the Trump administration, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing into the Trump administration closes some doors,\u201d the source said. \u201cHe would be tied to the Trump administration for better or for worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leaving City Hall for the White House would be as unprecedented as Trump\u2019s interjection into the city\u2019s mayoral campaign, and could forever define Adams\u2019 already scandal-tinged legacy.<\/p>\n<p>Adams would risk being compared in the history books to famously corrupt former Mayor Jimmy Walker, said Ken Frydman, a former press secretary to Rudy Giuliani and a longtime Democratic operative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Then-Gov. Franklin D.] Roosevelt forced corrupt Mayor Walker to resign on September 1, 1932, two years into his second term,\u201d Frydman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalker hightailed it to Europe with Betty Compton, his Ziegfeld girlfriend,\u201d Frydman added. \u201cBetter than DC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It would also be unlikely that Adams \u2014 who has a photo of Walker hanging in his City Hall office \u2014 accepts a gig he saw as a major step down from leading the nation\u2019s largest city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike all politicians, Eric Adams has an outsize ego,\u201d Frydman said. \u201cHe won\u2019t settle for undersecretary or ambassador to a third-world country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s post-mayoralty plans have long been to open his own international consultancy firm, insiders said.<\/p>\n<p>And he\u2019d consider an ambassadorship so long as it carried the prestige befitting a New York City mayor, they added.<\/p>\n<p>A high-profile role as ambassador to Saudi Arabia could fit the bill, especially as it could lead to well-paying post-government relationships, said a former staffer to Mayor Michael Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDC is extraordinarily hierarchical, so a big job isn\u2019t a big job unless you have a security detail and those are few and far between,\u201d the staffer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn ambassadorship route is a little easier to execute because there are more options and those have a lot of prestige, especially in powerful and important countries,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would think that Saudi Arabia is probably really interesting to Eric because the relationship one would make to a gulf state with their voluminous amount of investments and certainly could be very lucrative down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sources close to Adams said would view an offer at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development \u2013 as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/09\/03\/a-trump-administration-position-to-leave-the-race-for-mayor-eric-adams-faces-a-decision-00542212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Politico reported<\/a>\u00a0has been floated \u2013 as below his station.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the latest on Mayor Adams\u2019 mayoral campaign<\/p>\n<p>Another faction of White House insiders would rather Adams stay in the race and effectively secure a win for Mamdani, giving the GOP endless fodder with which to campaign against Democrats in next year\u2019s midterm elections, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not return to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The chaos spurred by Trump potentially considering a job for Adams \u2013 and his intrusion into New York City\u2019s politics \u2013 prompted a harsh smackdown from Gov. Kathy Hochul.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContrary to what the president thinks, he\u2019s not a king, he\u2019s not a kingmaker, and he should not be anointing the next mayor of New York City,\u201d Hochul told reporters after an unrelated announcement on Long Island.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul has not said who she is backing in the election, and is among the top state Democrats \u2014 including Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries \u2014 who have yet to publicly endorse their party\u2019s nominee, Mamdani.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adams, a Democrat, failed to rebrand himself with voters since launching his independent bid for mayor with his historically low poll numbers dipping even further in single digits, according to the latest surveys.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo has hovered in the mid-to-high 20s, and while he would seemingly benefit the most from Adams bowing out, it\u2019s anyone\u2019s bet whether those votes would flow to the ex-governor,\u00a0whose disdain for campaigning has been on full display since entering the race earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani has held a sizable lead since stunning the political world with his upset win in the Democratic primary, but his support has been stagnant now for months with high negatives dogging him ahead of the general election.<\/p>\n<p>After the Queens Assemblyman stunningly walloped\u00a0Cuomo in the June contest, big biz movers and shakers had appeared poised to consolidate their support around Adams.<\/p>\n<p>But the mayor\u2019s dismal fourth-place standing in the race has prompted one major defection from Adams\u2019 camp of supporters:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/03\/us-news\/bill-ackman-urges-andrew-cuomo-to-drop-out-of-nyc-mayoral-race-begrudgingly-endorses-eric-adams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">billionaire Bill Ackman<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ackman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/05\/us-news\/bill-ackman-backs-cuomo-for-nyc-mayor-urges-adams-to-step-aside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dramatically announced<\/a>\u00a0Friday that he will drop his support of Adams and back Cuomo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric should step aside and not run for reelection,\u201d the hedge fund titan posted on social media. \u201cEric\u2019s polls have deteriorated substantially since the primary, and it has become increasingly clear that he does not have a chance to beat @ZohranKMamdani.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Additional reporting by<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Steven Nelson, Vaughn Golden,\u00a0Josh Christenson and Hannah Fierick<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"He\u2019s waiting for an offer he can\u2019t refuse.
