I can\u2019t be on a spire in heels.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s a fitting anecdote for an actor imbued in self-deprecating charm. The British actress is most familiar to audiences as the divisive, headstrong Alicent Hightower in the TV adaptation of George R.R. Martin\u2019s\u00a0Fire &amp; Blood; a mother wrought by an unyielding sense of duty to her children. And yet, the woman who plays her is anything but a stickler for the rules: the Manchester-born-and-raised\u00a0Cooke\u00a0is adorably silly and, in spite of some of the hard-shelled characters she\u2019s brought to the screen, is warm, self-effacing to a fault and gloriously foulmouthed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSummiting the building King Kong scaled might not have been the career highlight she imagined, but Cooke\u2019s grounded outlook has come from observing others at the top. \u201cI\u2019ve seen people at the height of their careers in this industry,\u201d she says. \u201cThey\u2019re all incredibly well-prepared, but also really fucking kind and really empathetic. They don\u2019t rule a set with an iron fist and they don\u2019t shout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s a sentiment she\u2019s carried with her through stints on\u00a0Bates Motel\u00a0(2013-2017), Steven Spielberg\u2019s Ready Player One (2018) and the six-time Academy Award nominee\u00a0Sound of Metal (2019). Cooke \u2014\u00a0who grew up in the English town of Oldham, perched just outside of Manchester, the country\u2019s third-largest city \u2014 has been climbing the ranks for some time now, long before landing the role that would propel her to the top of the TV food chain. She\u2019s grown to love Alicent as she would a close friend (\u201cI feel fucking sorry for her\u201d) and is about to present to the world one of 2025\u2019s buzziest new shows, but amidst her ascension from provincial northern England to global stardom there has emerged a yearning for a quieter life, far from the fuss and frill of fame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn short,\u00a0Olivia\u00a0Cooke\u00a0is knackered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI want peace and quiet, and I want to do absolutely nothing,\u201d she says, before clarifying: \u201cIn my [personal] life.\u201d Professionally? \u201cI want more out of the stories that I get to tell, and more out of the experiences on set\u2026 My curiosity has not been dampened. I think it\u2019s only gotten stronger as I get older. I just crave knowledge from these sages of the industry. I want to work with the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEnter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/robin-wright\/\" id=\"auto-tag_robin-wright_1\" data-tag=\"robin-wright\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robin Wright<\/a>. She and the world-weary\u00a0Cooke\u00a0make a ferocious team in Prime Video\u2019s brand new six-part series\u00a0The Girlfriend, based on Michelle Frances\u2019 2017 novel of the same name. Her first foray into the performing arts was not quite as formal as the training some of her peers had sought at the U.K.\u2019s most prestigious drama schools.\u00a0Cooke, who says she grew up \u201cspellbound\u201d by musicals like\u00a0Oliver!,\u00a0The Wizard of Oz\u00a0and\u00a0The Sound of Music, dabbled in acting at a local theater workshop from the age of eight. \u201cIt was more personhood development and learning not to be a dick, how to work in a team,\u201d she admits. \u201cAnd then a lot of pissing about.\u201d Endearingly defensive of her hometown, she adds: \u201cNot to reduce anything that the company does, because they\u2019re incredible. But I didn\u2019t take it seriously at that point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt wasn\u2019t until she was 18 that an already-agented friend of\u00a0Cooke\u2019s recommended she attend some open auditions. One Google search for \u201caudition monologue\u201d and an\u00a0Adele cover later,\u00a0she received a response: \u201c\u2018We don\u2019t think\u00a0Olivia\u2019s quite ready to be on the acting side just yet, so maybe we\u2019re going to put her on the commercial side.&#8217;\u201d Cue\u00a0Cooke\u00a0sat among six-foot teens at modelling castings and a newfound insecurity about her \u201cManchester gait\u201d: \u201cI\u2019d never done a catwalk in my life, and I walk like Liam Gallagher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut she\u2019d landed an agent, and with that luxury came run-ins with industry-renowned casting director Beverley Keogh. (Not before a small cameo riding the back of Harry Styles in a One Direction video,\u00a0Cooke\u00a0coyly confirms to be true: \u201cI just remember just being like, \u2018Oh, great. I don\u2019t have to go into my cafe job today. I\u2019m getting paid 250 quid to frolic with One Direction.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKeogh helped\u00a0Cooke\u00a0get on the industry radar. After a role as Christopher Eccleston\u2019s daughter on BBC One\u2019s 2012 series\u00a0Blackout,\u00a0Cooke\u00a0found herself living in Vancouver for nine months to shoot the hugely popular U.S. horror-drama\u00a0Bates Motel. It was here, at just 21, she decided to make the move to New York and position herself as an aspiring Hollywood starlet. \u201cI\u2019d never lived anywhere else apart from my mum\u2019s house,\u201d she says. \u201cSo I had to be a grown-up very quickly, and cook tuna pasta every night because I didn\u2019t know what else to cook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt was also at this time that the Briton had been cast in\u00a0Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, a 2015 coming-of-age film set in the U.S. All of a sudden,\u00a0Cooke\u00a0was rubbing shoulders with some of America\u2019s brightest young talents \u2014\u00a0Thomas Mann, R.J. I just needed some roots. I\u2019m so boring now,\u201d she laughs. \u201cAnd I\u2019m such a homebody that I can\u2019t believe I was so intrepid.\u201d It brings up some overdue introspection for the star: \u201cI was so weenie. I was just pretending to be a woman. I was hanging around with a lot of older people, and I didn\u2019t really know who I was. I think I was masking a lot of fear and pressure that I put on myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCooke\u00a0found herself homesick for her native Britain. She missed her friends and their no-nonsense senses of humor \u2014\u00a0a cultural sensibility not for the faint-hearted. \u201cI just needed someone to take the piss out of me and for me to take the piss out of them, too,\u201d she says. \u201cI remember my boyfriend at the time in New York would be like, \u2018You\u2019re really mean.\u2019 I was like, \u2018No, I\u2019m saying it with such love and endearment! Do it back to me!\u2019 But it doesn\u2019t really translate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhen the pandemic arrived, an entire world was brought to a standstill. Despite her reservations about the state of the industry, a 26-year-old\u00a0Cooke\u00a0was ecstatic upon her return to the U.K.: \u201cIt was the first time that I had taken a breath.\u201d It was also the first time since her career boom that she learned the value of slowing down; a weapon the homebody has firmly stored in her arsenal. Just in time, too \u2014\u00a0Cooke\u00a0was about to experience a level of fame she\u2019d never known before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt got a bit squeaky bum time,\u201d\u00a0Cooke\u00a0says about finding herself deep in the throes of a months-long audition process for a hotly anticipated\u00a0Game of Thrones\u00a0prequel series (for U.S. readers, this phrase is a Brits\u2019 way of saying time was dwindling, and the pressure was rising). It was August 2020, and even entertainment\u2019s most celebrated hall-of-famers were confined to their homes while COVID wreaked havoc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMany of those auditioning for female characters had been asked to read for Rhaenyra Targaryen, a role that eventually went to fellow Brit Emma D\u2019Arcy (and Milly Alcock, as the younger version). But the showrunners were soon eyeing a dark-haired, brown-eyed\u00a0Cooke\u00a0for the older role of Rhaenyra\u2019s childhood best friend Alicent Hightower, the second wife of King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and daughter of Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI got a call saying, \u2018They want to put you on hold for two weeks, so don\u2019t take any other jobs,&#8217;\u201d\u00a0Cooke\u00a0explains. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Absolutely fine. There are no jobs going but sure, if they want to think that I\u2019m incredibly in demand.\u2019 Then, in October, I got the call that that they wanted to offer me the part. When something goes on for that long, you go beyond wanting it. It becomes, \u2018Well, I\u2019ve imagined my whole life doing this job now.\u2019 It felt really important that I got it. So, thank God I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCrouched down against the wall in her London flat,\u00a0Cooke\u00a0celebrated for a moment before feeling a weighty sense of dread. \u201cI don\u2019t think I understood it, but I felt it,\u201d she says about having to lead the next instalment in what has become one of the most successful franchises in TV history. \u201cI felt it right next to my head, looming like some sort of omnipotent force.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt the end of season two, Alicent is driven to the ultimate sacrifice. Despite her sons\u2019 best attempts at decimating (in true Targaryen fashion) a precarious political and familial infrastructure, she has managed to keep her only daughter alive (Helaena Targaryen, played by Phia Saban). Team Black are finally united and have added more dragon-riders to their army. The finale was watched by 8.9 million people across the States. It saw Alicent \u2014\u00a0who had spent much of the season attempting to determine whether the ghastly behavior of some of her children was the result of nature or nurture \u2014\u00a0defiantly opting to escape with Helaena and vowing to help Rhaenyra take back the crown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI do feel protective of Alicent,\u201d says\u00a0Cooke. \u201cI have to be empathetic, and I feel fucking sorry for her. I feel she\u2019s grown up into this patriarchal system and she\u2019s been brainwashed by her father to honor this lineage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the context of some not-so-nice fan interactions,\u00a0Cooke\u00a0recalls being on the receiving end of some bold comments, including personal takes about her depiction of Alicent and the character as a whole. \u201cThey\u2019ll take a picture, and then they\u2019ll be like: \u2018We HATE your character!\u2019 Sometimes people do say that with a lot of malice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/olivia-cooke-emma-d-arcy.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1280\" width=\"1920\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tOlivia Cooke and Emma D\u2019Arcy in \u201cDriftmark,\u201d season one of House of the Dragon.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOllie Upton \/ HBO<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe commotion has come as a surprise to\u00a0Cooke, who didn\u2019t foresee her role as such a divisive one. \u201c[Alicent has] really stirred up a lot of feelings,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s odd to be on the receiving end of that as someone who has only ever tried to convey her with as much complexity as possible.\u201d The reception to the Emmy-nominated series thrust\u00a0Cooke\u00a0and her castmates into the spotlight, and it\u2019s not a perk of the job she\u2019s enjoyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThus far, episodes have dropped weekly. It\u2019s a savvy strategy from HBO: hype builds around each instalment and explodes on social media as it airs, drawing thousands of fans to X, TikTok, Reddit and Instagram. With this chaos comes scrutiny \u2014 some fans of Martin\u2019s writing are so passionately loyal that fact and fiction blur, and\u00a0the actors are treated as if they OK\u2019d sending dragons into battle themselves. Alicent is one of the more contentious characters \u2014\u00a0a selection of recent tweets call her the C-word, \u201cannoying as fuck,\u201d and \u201ca bitch that needs to be put down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cSome of the fans have been fucking horrible to our cast,\u201d\u00a0Cooke\u00a0says,\u00a0adding that she has found solace in the likes of D\u2019Arcy and\u00a0Doctor Who\u00a0star Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), who have faced similar criticism. \u201cIt makes me really angry that we\u2019re then supposed to just bow down and [pay] obeisance to these people that only want to say the most debased, hate-filled things. But thankfully, we\u2019ve all experienced it in our own way, and we\u2019ve got each other, which doesn\u2019t make it right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor\u00a0Cooke, the intense fandom is \u201cvery particular\u201d to the\u00a0GOT\u00a0and\u00a0HOTD\u00a0fandom. \u201cI think [it\u2019s the] huge emotions. There\u2019s also been really wonderful interactions and I\u2019m so glad that Emma gets as much love as they do as well, because they\u2019re fucking fantastic and such a beautiful, wonderful human as well\u2026 Matt\u2019s not a stranger to the fury of fandom so he takes it on the chin. He holds himself in a really lovely way where he doesn\u2019t let it stick to him.\u201d\u00a0Cooke, however, has struggled with the attention for her entire career. \u201cI think it\u2019s the Mancunian in me \u2014\u00a0I don\u2019t want anyone to think that I think too highly of myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThis furor over Alicent has rung alarm bells for\u00a0Cooke, who says the kind of misogyny her character experiences is mirrored by the real world. \u201cIt\u2019s only really getting worse,\u201d she says. \u201cI think about the women in Afghanistan who haven\u2019t had the right to an education or work for years now, the rise of Andrew Tate and [prominent U.K. far-right activist] Tommy Robinson dismissing any agency or autonomy that women should have as an innate human right. Obviously, we\u2019re so wonderful and so powerful and we\u2019re clearly something to be envied. And they want to take away all our rights because we\u2019re so amazing. I say that about non-binary people, trans people, about queer people in general. Despite the adversity, we are fucking incredible \u2014 and that makes straight men insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMaking straight men insane comes with the territory on one of TV\u2019s most-talked about shows of the last five years (House of the Dragon\u00a0continues to rack up toward 10 million viewers per ep). She\u2019s due back on set in late August to film for another few months before wrapping on season three mid-October. Will audiences finally get the fiery clash we\u2019ve been waiting for? \u201cThey\u2019ll get that for sure,\u201d promises\u00a0Cooke. \u201cNo worries about all the big fighty, fighty, dragon, dragon stuff.\u201d On Alison\u2019s arc, she adds: \u201cHow do I say this without the red dot coming up on my forehead? In the show,\u00a0Cooke\u00a0plays Cherry opposite Laurie Davidson\u2019s Daniel. Cherry has worked hard to escape her working class upbringing and Daniel\u2019s excessively wealthy family are emblematic of the life she pictures for herself. The only issue is his mother Laura (Wright), a woman who has lost a child once before and is petrified of a repeat. What unfolds is a finger-pointing game of Who\u2019s Behaved Worse? with Cherry and Laura\u2019s varying recollections of their encounters clouding our comprehension. Waleed Zuaiter, Anna Chancellor, Francesca Corney and Shalom Brune-Franklin also star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWright wanted\u00a0Cooke\u00a0for the role of Cherry immediately. The\u00a0Forrest Gump\u00a0and\u00a0House of Cards\u00a0alum had signed on to just direct, but \u201cthe production company were like, \u2018It\u2019s Robin Wright,&#8217;\u201d recalls\u00a0Cooke. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be in it as well\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWas it odd having Wright star in the show while calling the shots? Not at all, apparently. \u201cIt felt like the tone of the show was streamlined,\u201d says\u00a0Cooke. \u201cShe was in nearly every scene, so it felt like the chain of command was shortened, which was fantastic. Just watching her in a scene, she\u2019d be so emotional and raw and crying her eyes out, and then she\u2019d be like [Cooke\u00a0slides into a flawless Californian accent mid-sentence]: \u2018Okay, cut. We\u2019re just gonna do a wide now, is that okay? Okay, let\u2019s move on.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cOlivia\u00a0is such a trouper,\u201d says Wright. \u201cShe is one of the most down-to-earth people I\u2019ve ever met \u2014\u00a0we would turn the switches on to do the scenes with intense tension as our characters, and as soon as cut was called we would be back to ourselves, giggling about the\u00a0ludicrous things we just did to each other in a scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNo spoilers, of course, but the ludicrously-behaved duo take things to the extreme. Says\u00a0Cooke\u00a0of the common ground between her and Cherry: \u201cI think we\u2019ve both got pretty strong work ethics. That\u2019s where it [ends]. I\u2019m so different to her. I\u2019m in awe of someone who can behave like Cherry, who is really in touch with her anger and can just fucking go ballistic at someone. I don\u2019t mind that she omits the truths or tells half truths to get where she\u2019s going. Because millionaires do that all the time and no one calls them out. I love her confidence and gumption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPlaying the character, much like Alicent Hightower in her stubbornness and strength, has been something of a purifying experience for\u00a0Cooke. \u201cI get to access those different parts of myself in more of a controlled environment that feels bit safer\u2026 I don\u2019t like to display any intense emotion in my personal life. I mean, I\u2019m talking to my therapist about it and any hard emotions I push to the side and repress pop out in other horrible ways. I hate watching things on my own \u2014 it feels so sterile.\u201d And while\u00a0Cooke\u00a0tells\u00a0THR\u00a0she\u2019s been hankering for a little more respite than the last couple of years, there\u2019s no denying she\u2019ll have to get used to seeing herself on-screen (as long as it\u2019s not disrupting her peace\u00a0too\u00a0much).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJoachim Trier, Paul Thomas Anderson and Celine Song are among her dream collaborators, and if Wright\u2019s judgement is anything to go by,\u00a0Cooke\u00a0is destined for the best.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWith a sharp pang of patriotism, she also cites the breadth of emerging talent in the U.K. film and TV industry (with an F-bomb, of course).
