But an expert has warned that overindulging in this common painkiller could lead to dire health consequences – or even death.

Dr Donald Grant, a GP of 40 years and senior clinical advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, has sounded the alarm on the nation’s paracetamol habits, cautioning against its misuse and outlining the potential long-term dangers.

Managing paracetamol use – why it’s important

Dr Grant cautioned: “Taking too much paracetamol or utilising the medication when it’s not needed can pose significant risks to our physical well-being – both immediately and in the long-term.”

He emphasised the importance of being aware of the hazards associated with paracetamol to ensure it is used appropriately.

The threat to liver health

Dr Grant warned: “Too much paracetamol can have drastic effects on liver health, causing damage and risking failure. This occurs when there’s too much of the drug present in the body, highlighting how important it is to stick to recommended dosages for the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle.

“To avoid causing damage to the liver, it’s also important to avoid consuming alcohol when taking paracetamol as the combination of the two can drastically increase the risk of damage.

“Ingesting more than the recommended daily amount of paracetamol can result in overdose, which has a range of symptoms including jaundice, nausea, loss of appetite and confusion. It may even result in death in extreme circumstances.”

Treatment is available, however immediate action is essential: “An antidote can be administered to treat a paracetamol overdose, but this must be done urgently.

“According to Public Health England, around 100,000 people are admitted to hospital each year as a result of overdosing on paracetamol.”

Recommended paracetamol dosage

Dr Grant said: “It’s vital to understand the recommended paracetamol dosage for adults and children, to avoid a dangerous intake. Adults can take two 500mg tablets every four to six hours and are not recommended to exceed eight tablets over 24 hours.

“This can be even lower for those weighing less than 8st.”

The guidance for children’s dosages must be finely tuned: “For children, it’s best to discuss the correct dosage based on the child’s specific age and weight, to ensure the correct amount of paracetamol is administered.

“By understanding the health risks that come with a high intake of paracetamol and learning the recommended dosage, people can avoid long-term health implications and the risk of overdose.”

Many Brits take paracetamol regularly, with 6,300 tonnes sold annually – that’s around 70 tablets per person, according…

[34
210,15072,15071,18970,1060,18968,18969,18972,18971,67,132,68
0":"post-20370","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-medication","8":"tag-health","9":"tag-health-section","10":"tag-liver-disease","11":"tag-liver-health-risks","12":"tag-medication","13":"tag-pain-relief","14":"tag-paracetamol-misuse","15":"tag-paracetamol-overdose-prevention","16":"tag-recommended-dosage","17":"tag-united-states","18":"tag-unitedstates","19":"tag-us
["GET
