PAPILLION, Neb. (WOWT) – Derek Jones began his senior year at Papillion La Vista South with a bang.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d say it\u2019s one of my top games,\u201d Jones told First Alert 6.<\/p>\n
The Titans opened Week 1 with a rivalry matchup against Papillion La Vista.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat game always brings a little bit more juice than some of the other ones,\u201d Papio South football coach Tim Clevenger said. \u201cThe kids always get pretty amped up.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI was very juiced up,\u201d Jones added. \u201cI just wanted to get them back.\u201d<\/p>\n
The senior running back scored five total touchdowns in a 41-14 win.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe whole crowd was riled up. We were ready to go,\u201d Jones said. \u201cWe fired off the ball, smacked them first and I knew it was going to be a great day from there.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s been preparing for this for a long time,\u201d Clevenger added. \u201cYou see a kid work so hard, lay it on the line year after year and then see it pay off his senior year is pretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n
Through Week 1, Jones\u2019 five scores lead the entire state. Yet, he is quick to credit his teammates.<\/p>\n
\u201cI bleed blue with everything I do. It\u2019s all about the program, all about the team first,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n
Clevenger said that mindset makes all the difference.<\/p>\n
\u201cKeep doing what he\u2019s doing, keep practicing hard, keep leading, keep being a great teammate,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen he does those things, we\u2019ll be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
And Jones has a message for the rest of Class A: \u201cI think we\u2019re really a team that needs to be watched and I think we\u2019re coming.\u201d<\/p>\n
