Andrew Cuomo is proudly touting his support of charter schools \u2014 which his main mayoral rival, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/06\/us-news\/mamdani-vows-to-declare-war-against-charter-schools-if-electioned-mayor-survey-reveals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zohran Mamdani, opposes<\/a> \u2014 after failing to nab the powerful teachers\u2019 union endorsement in the primary.<\/p>\n<p>The ex-gov <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/andrewcuomo\/status\/1963990858316882229?s=10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">posted an infographic on<\/a> X Friday slamming his socialist opponent over their education policy differences, which noted the Democratic nominee is \u201cagainst\u201d charter schools while claiming Cuomo is \u201cfor\u201d them.<\/p>\n<p>Ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo has publicly made it known he is in full support of charter schools across the Big Apple. Robert Miller<\/p>\n<p>But during the Democratic primary campaign, Cuomo was noticeably quiet on charters as he boosted issues championed by the powerful United Federation of Teachers union instead. <\/p>\n<p>His campaign\u2019s press release outlining his educational platform made no mention of charters, and buried his piecemeal advocacy for them in point 16 of his original 25 point education plan, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/20\/us-news\/andrew-cuomo-tones-down-support-of-charter-schools-in-run-for-mayor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Post reported at the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpecialized high schools and public charter schools that demonstrate strong results for students \u2014 especially those of color or from underserved communities \u2014 must be supported and expanded, not politicized or undermined,\u201d the plan stated.<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo also failed to explicitly say whether he supported lifting the cap on charter schools, which he supported as governor, during the primary race.<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo\u2019s main rival for the mayorship of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, has opposed charter schools.<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan Institute Educational Scholar Jennifer Weber noted that while Cuomo supported charters as governor, she believes he toned down his rhetoric during the primary in a bid to nab the UFT endorsement. <\/p>\n<p>But since the UFT endorsed Mamdani following his stunning win in June, Cuomo \u2014 who is running in the November election as an independent \u2014 is more free to speak out in support of the issue, fiercely opposed by the union and its boss, Mike Mulgrew, Weber said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that it is an important focus right now, against Mandami, because the education focus needs to be about improving educational outcomes, and charter schools have shown better outcomes for students,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani has been backed by the United Federation of Teachers, which Cuomo failed to receive. Google Maps<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo\u2019s updated platform has a section on his campaign website that reads \u201cexpand and protect charter schools\u201d in which he says he supports boosting the state cap to allow more of the schools to open in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>During an August press conference, Cuomo also publicly voiced support for lifting the cap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we lifting the charter cap? Or are we siding with the teacher\u2019s unions?\u201d Democratic consultant Chris Sosa said.<\/p>\n<p>The former governor posted an infographic on X, calling out the socialist candidate for his educational policies. Stephen Yang<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recommend vertigo medication before trying to locate Cuomo\u2019s current position, then be sure to check back a week later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A longtime political strategist added: \u201cSummer isn\u2019t over yet, still using the old flip flops.
