He was 78.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tReps for Volman confirmed his death to Rolling Stone, saying he died in Nashville after a \u201cbrief, unexpected illness.\u201d Volman was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-turtles-mark-volman-lewy-body-dementia-diagnosis-1234771279\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">battling Lewy body dementia<\/a>, which he was diagnosed with in 2020. However, he continued to tour and did not publicly reveal his diagnosis until 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFor much of his career, Volman worked closely with his friend Howard Kaylan, another co-founder of the Turtles and the band\u2019s lead vocalist. After the Turtles disbanded, Volman and Kaylan linked up with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, where they began to perform under the name Flo and Eddie. (Volman was \u201cFlo,\u201d which was short for \u201cThe Phlorescent Leech.\u201d)\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAlong with their work with Zappa, Flo and Eddie released numerous albums of their own and scored a handful of films and TV shows. They also provided backing vocals for some of the biggest artists of the Seventies and Eighties, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono, T.Rex, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, Blondie, Stephen Stills, David Cassidy, Ray Manzarek, and Roger McGuinn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tVolman was born April 19, 1947, in Los Angeles and began playing music as a teenager. In junior high (per an <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230610124040\/http:\/\/theturtles.com\/downloads\/TurtlesLONGHistory_1989.pdf\">old band bio<\/a>), he took up the clarinet and happened to take lessons with the same teacher who was teaching Kaylan the same instrument. It wasn\u2019t until high school, however, that the pair would meet in an a cappella group (both sang tenor).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tVolman, Kaylan, and several friends \u2014 guitarist Al Nichol, drummer Don Murray, and bassist Chuck Portz \u2014 played in a band called the Crossfires during high school before forming the Turtles after graduation. (Jim Tucker, another guitarist, rounded out the band\u2019s original lineup.) The Turtles cut their teeth playing clubs and college parties around Southern California before embarking on lengthier tours. They released their first recordings in 1965, scoring a Top 10 hit with their debut single, a rendition of Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cIt Ain\u2019t Me Babe.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAfter releasing two albums (1965\u2019s It Ain\u2019t Me, Babe and 1966\u2019s You Baby), the Turtles scored their signature hit with \u201cHappy Together\u201d \u2014 a peppy blast of lovestruck flower-power pop defined by its rousing refrain of ba-ba-baaaahh\u2019s. The song enjoyed a three-week stand at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967 and has remained one of the defining songs of the era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile \u201cHappy Together\u201d anchored the Turtles\u2019 1967 album of the same name, it wasn\u2019t their only hit. The duo that penned the title track \u2014 Alan Gordon and Garry Bonner \u2014 also wrote \u201cShe\u2019d Rather Be With Me,\u201d which peaked at Number Three on the Hot 100. The pair would write some of the Turtles\u2019 other big hits in the coming years, too, including \u201cShe\u2019s My Girl\u201d and \u201cYou Know What I Mean.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a 2023 interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldminemag.com\/interviews\/mark-volman-happy-forever-with-his-music-career-and-then-some\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Goldmine<\/a>, Volman said that \u201cHappy Together\u201d \u201cheld up so well that it became the record of our career.\u201d But, he continued, \u201cmusically I think \u2018She\u2019s My Girl,\u2019 \u2018You Know What I Mean,\u2019 \u2018Me About You,\u2019 \u2018The Story of Rock &amp; Roll,\u2019 and a few others are even better records. But every group hopes to have a \u2018Happy Together\u2019 and that makes us very fortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Turtles would release two more albums \u2014 1968\u2019s The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands and 1969\u2019s Turtle Soup \u2014 before disbanding in 1970. Volman, Kaylan, and Jim Pons (who\u2019d become the Turtles\u2019 bassist in 1967) went on to join Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, with whom they played regularly over the next several decades. (As Flo and Eddie, they sang a wonkier version of \u201cHappy Together\u201d on Zappa\u2019s live album, Fillmore East \u2013 June 1971.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cFrank opened the door for us to explore and be involved with a lot of really grown up music,\u201d Volman told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/news\/living-legends-interview-with-mark-volman-of-the-turtles\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Recording Academy<\/a>. \u201cI say \u2018grown up\u2019 because it had guitar changes and singing parts that we created for Frank. We couldn\u2019t create those for any other place.\u201d He added that Zappa \u201creally turned us loose. He turned us loose to sing what we could bring to the different songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOver the next few decades, Volman and Kaylan were almost always busy. On top of their work with Zappa, they became in-demand session vocalists, and wrote and recorded several Flo and Eddie albums of their own (the first, The Phlorescent Leech &amp; Eddie, arrived in 1972). In the Eighties, they started composing music more regularly for film and TV, doing both children\u2019s projects like The Care Bears TV series and the Zucker-Abrams-Zucker spoof comedy Top Secret!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile he stayed busy as a musician into the Nineties, Volman also went back to college and got his bachelor\u2019s degree at Loyola Marymount University. He went on to earn a Master\u2019s degree and eventually started teaching college-level music business courses, enjoying a lengthy stint at Belmont University in Nashville (which is famous for its music and music business programs).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tVolman and Kaylan were also part of several major music copyright cases. In 1991, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-lists\/songs-on-trial-12-landmark-music-copyright-cases-166396\/de-la-soul-vs-the-turtles-1991-61686\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">they sued De La Soul<\/a> over a sample of the Turtles\u2019 \u201cYou Showed Me\u201d in \u201cTransmitting Live From Mars.\u201d The case was settled out of court, but many in the hip-hop world criticized the outcome, saying it set a dangerous precedent that could bankrupt artists with licensing and\/or legal fees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThen, in 2013 they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-turtles-slap-siriusxm-with-100-million-lawsuit-56219\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filed a class action lawsuit<\/a> against SiriusXM, accusing the satellite radio company of broadcasting songs recorded before 1972 without compensating labels or artists. (New sound recordings didn\u2019t receive federal copyright protection until 1972, but the law wasn\u2019t clear on what protections should be given to pre-72 recordings.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe case led to a groundswell of similar suits brought by major and independent labels. The courts repeatedly ruled in favor of the labels, and eventually Sirius began to settle the suits, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/siriusxm-settles-turtles-copyright-lawsuit-for-99-million-109568\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including a $99 million settlement<\/a> with the Turtles in 2016. The case helped pave the way for the CLASSICS (Compensating Legacy Artists for their Songs, Service, and Important Contributions to Society) Act, a component of the 2019 Music Modernization Act, that finally extends federal copyright protections to pre-1972 recordings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn 2015, Volman and Kaylan celebrated their 50th anniversary together with a massive North American tour. While Kaylan retired from the road in 2018 because of health issues, Volman continued to perform regularly. In 2023, he published his memoir, Happy Forever: My Musical Adventures With The Turtles, Frank Zappa, T.
