The Sunday scaries are common, and there are ways to cope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nMany people have experienced the Sunday scaries, even if they aren&#8217;t familiar with the phrase.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s &#8220;a lovely alliteration for something that people have been feeling for generations,&#8221; Kathleen Pike, a professor of psychology at Columbia University&#8217;s Mailman School of Public Health, told the <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/2025\/06\/15\/sunday-scaries-anxiety-manage-strategies\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p><b>MORE:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/temple-health-women-families-hospital-maternal-health-disparities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Temple&#8217;s new Women and Families Hospital aims to reduce maternal health disparities<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nThe Sunday scaries tend to include a sense of depression, anxiety or dread that creeps in during the weekend as Monday \u2013 and the return to work or school \u2013 approaches. And they&#8217;re pretty common, according to studies.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nA 2024 <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/how-sunday-scaries-ruining-workers-weekends-whatjobs-hcffe\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a> survey, for instance, found that 70% of respondents experienced workweek dread, including interns and executives. Nearly 40% of people said they had taken sick days because of the Sunday scaries, and 9% said they had suffered panic attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnother 2024 <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/sunday-scaries-hit-gen-z-hardest-1961216\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> of 2,000 Americans found that Generation Z \u2013 people born between 1997 and 2012 \u2013 seemed to disproportionately experience the Sunday scaries. Out of that age group, 74% said they had workweek dread once a month, typically setting in around 4 p.m. Sundays. And 10% of respondents said the scaries hit them at 6 a.m. Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing wrong with a person if they feel sad that the weekend is over,&#8221; Susanne Cooperman, a neuropsychologist and psychoanalyst at New York University Langone Huntington Medical Group, told <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7275089\/what-are-sunday-scaries\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Time<\/a> in April. &#8220;It&#8217;s when it really interferes in your functioning \u2014 when you can&#8217;t focus, when you can&#8217;t sleep, when you feel yourself medicating with alcohol \u2014 then you need help.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\n<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/sunday-scaries\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Symptoms<\/a> of the Sunday scaries may include trouble sleeping, upset stomach, headache, racing heart, sweating and trouble breathing.\u00a0Severe cases may even lead to depression and heart attacks, according to the Cleveland Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>How to manage the Sunday scaries<\/p>\n<p>\nCooperman <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7275089\/what-are-sunday-scaries\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended<\/a> using a relaxation or meditation app to help &#8220;stay in the moment,&#8221; to &#8220;really try to curtail that catastrophizing into the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\nAnother coping mechanism is to &#8220;reframe Sunday as a time for grounding rather than stress,&#8221; psychotherapist Brooke Sprowl told <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/sunday-scaries-hit-gen-z-hardest-1961216\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsweek<\/a>\u00a0last year. &#8220;Instead of seeing it as the end of something, use the afternoon to prepare intentionally for the week ahead \u2014 whether through a calming ritual, setting gentle goals or simply creating space for reflection.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMorra Aarons-Mele, host of the podcast &#8220;<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/morraam.com\/podcast\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Anxious Achiever<\/a>,&#8221; suggested<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/2025\/06\/15\/sunday-scaries-anxiety-manage-strategies\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0people<\/a> &#8220;rehearse the week&#8221; \u2013 planning out each day \u2014 to ease the sense that things are out of control.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Cleveland Clinic also recommends:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote\">\n<p>\n\u2022 Have a treat on Mondays, a yummy pastry or a special coffee.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u2022 Go to bed at the same time every Sunday night and make sure to get adequate sleep.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u2022 Avoid working on weekends when possible in order to recharge.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u2022 Exercise. Physical activities produce endorphins, a natural antidepressant.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThe Cleveland Clinic recommends seeking help from a mental health professional if the Sunday scaries are interfering with sleep or eating \u2013 or causing increased use of alcohol or other substances.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Many people have experienced the Sunday scaries, even if they aren&#8217;t familiar with the phrase.
