With Omaha still holding a six-point lead as Houston reached 11 points, the Cougars mounted a flurry of small rallies to even the set at 18-18. The teams then battled to 19-19, 20-20, 24-24 and 25-25 ties before a kill from Reid and ace from freshman Aubrey Sears clinched the set, 27-25.

Houston maintained the momentum heading into the second. Winning the first four points, the Cougars forced an early Omaha timeout at 9-4 after another 4-0 run reestablished the lead. Houston maintained its edge until the Mavericks earned their first lead of the frame at 13-12. The set remained close after with neither team claiming larger than a two-point edge until Houston won back-to-back points to win the set, 25-22.

The Cougars secured the win in the third.
