(ABC News: Keane Bourke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He described a &#8220;disheartening&#8221; work environment, with many staff looking for a way out &#8220;and checking their super balance&#8221; with no end in sight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve almost moved, on some days, from the traditional triage process of seeing people by order of priority to almost like a disaster situation where \u2026 we are triaging but in some respects, we&#8217;re not, we&#8217;re just sieving and sorting like you would in a disaster situation, where people who have obviously immediate life threats are still getting seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And I don&#8217;t want to put anyone off coming to emergency departments, you will still get excellent care if you&#8217;ve got immediate life threats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But it&#8217;s the group that aren&#8217;t immediate life threats, aren&#8217;t obvious immediate life threats, you&#8217;re getting put in our waiting room, that frighten us the most, because they might reveal themselves as having something horrible wrong with them while they&#8217;re sitting in our waiting room.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ramping &#8216;fixation&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Allely also said an &#8220;unhealthy fixation&#8221; on ramping metrics within upper ranks of the health department was putting patients at risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Because we are getting phone calls on a daily basis to get people off the ramp who aren&#8217;t fit to be got off the ramp and are being put in the waiting rooms, unsupervised \u2026 because there&#8217;s not the resources to look after them,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A row of parked ambulances.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/bce1851fbbfe4cacaccbf93a7e48bb35\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">WA public hospitals recorded a new ambulance ramping record last month. (ABC News: Keane Bourke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And then bad outcomes are happening, like the patient who suffers from dementia who comes in on an ambulance and gets put in a waiting room, even though they&#8217;re not safe to be put there, and then has a fall and injures themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Those things are happening almost daily, I would say, in most emergency departments around the state and those incidents will increase.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The risk in our waiting rooms, in particular in the emergency departments, is just rising and rising and rising.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-01\/wa-sets-new-ambulance-ramping-record\/105720226\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WA sets new ambulance ramping record<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Western Australia again breaks the state record for the amount of time ambulances spent ramped outside hospitals, despite more than 100 elective surgeries being postponed to ease pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The state government has repeatedly pointed to a worse-than-usual flu season for recent pressures, combined with a growing number of older Australians unable to be cared for by the aged care system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Premier Roger Cook and Aged Care Minister Simone McGurk travelled to Canberra last week to discuss how to free up the hundreds of hospital beds they say are being taken up by people who should be in aged care, securing a trip west by the federal Aged Care Minister Sam Rae later this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms McGurk is also spearheading a state government move into the aged care space \u2014 which is traditionally the responsibility of the Commonwealth \u2014 to try and meet that demand.<\/p>\n<p>Ageing concerns<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Allely said the pressures of caring for an ageing population are only accelerating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The number of over 85s attending our emergency departments are conservatively predicted to increase by over 500 per cent between now and 2050,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A nurse interacts with a monitor in a patient's room seen from outside.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/939100c53b1e4e8477e43728fed76788\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dr Peter Allely says the risk in emergency departments will continue to rise unless something is done. (ABC News: Keane Bourke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We are just at the beginning of that exponential curve and you&#8217;ve seen how bad the data is from our emergency departments.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s very frightening. (ABC News: Keane Bourke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve increased the workforce by 33 per cent, making sure we have doctors and nurses available to stand by the beds in which patients lie,&#8221; Premier Roger Cook said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve increased the number of beds since 2021 by 900.
