{"id":20441,"date":"2025-06-28T00:34:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T00:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/20441\/"},"modified":"2025-06-28T00:34:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T00:34:09","slug":"silent-movie-mondays-showcase-returns-to-balboa-theatre-on-aug-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/20441\/","title":{"rendered":"Silent Movie Mondays showcase returns to Balboa Theatre on Aug. 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>San Diego Theatres will screen a series of silent films accompanied by organists on various Mondays beginning in August at the Balboa Theatre in the Gaslamp.<\/p>\n<p>This special showcase invites audience members to explore the history of cinema without words, supported by the sound of an organ, which was common in the 1920s to evoke emotion and provide nuance to this new medium of motion pictures.<\/p>\n<p>During the films, special guest organists will play a historic Wonder Morton organ. (Alejandro Tamayo \/ The San Diego Union-Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>The schedule kicks off with a special Saturday matinee showing of the 1924 version of \u201cPeter Pan\u201d on\u00a0 Aug. 9, accompanied by organist Brett Valliant, before picking back up on Monday, Sept. 29.<\/p>\n<p>For its second season, Silent Movie Mondays\u2019 lineup will increase from five to nine films, following the inaugural season (and the 100 year anniversary of the Balboa Theatre in the Gaslamp), which featured films like; Charlie Chaplin\u2019s \u201cThe Gold Rush\u201d (1925) and \u201cThe Mask of Zorro\u201d (1920).<\/p>\n<p>The second season of the silent movie showcase will continue through the rest of the year and extend into 2026. All movie showtimes are 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.<\/p>\n<p>Sept. 29: \u201cThe Phantom of the Opera\u201d (1925) with organist Russ Peck<\/p>\n<p>Oct. 27: \u201cNosferatu: A Symphony of Horror\u201d (1922) with organist David Marsh<\/p>\n<p>Dec. 15: \u201cOld Scrooge\u201d (1926) and \u201cA Dog\u2019s Life\u201d (1918) with organist Ken Double<\/p>\n<p>Feb. 9: \u201cWings\u201d (1927) with organist Russ Peck<\/p>\n<p>March 30: \u201cThe Black Pirate\u201d (1926) with organist Ken Double<\/p>\n<p>April 20: \u201cMetropolis\u201d (1927) with organist Brett Miller<\/p>\n<p>June 8: \u201cSafety Last!\u201d (1923) organist Russ Peck<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for the Silent Movie Monday series start at $28 for reserved seating ($24 for students, seniors, and military members) and are available for purchase at <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegotheatres.org\/silent-movie-mondays\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sandiegotheatres.org\/silent-movie-mondays<\/a>.\u00a0Additionally, each Monday screening will have a post-film conversation with the evening\u2019s featured organist and hosted by a special guest film expert.<\/p>\n<p>Premium reserved seating is available for $38 or $33 for students, seniors and military members.
