HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 The Houston Zoo announces 11-year-old jaguar, Tesoro, was euthanized Friday morning after struggling to recover from a serious leg injury.<\/p>\n

Six weeks after surgery, zoo officials said Tesoro\u2019s condition took a turn for the worse to the point where medical intervention would no longer improve his quality of life. <\/p>\n

With Tesoro\u2019s wellbeing declining, the Zoo\u2019s veterinary and animal care teams made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize the beloved jaguar. <\/p>\n

What happened<\/b><\/p>\n

According to the zoo, Tesoro\u2019s injury was discovered in early May when his animal care team noticed him limping, and radiographs indicated he fractured his elbow, and had arthritis and elbow dysplasia. After performing surgery, his recovery was never guaranteed. <\/p>\n

The team conducted routine checkups and monitored his condition, ensuring his comfort. But this morning, his care team saw that he needed emergency medical attention. While under anesthesia, the team said they discovered that he had re-broken his leg and was in renal failure, a condition that occurs when one or both kidneys stop working properly. <\/p>\n

Life of Tesoro<\/b><\/p>\n

Born in 2014, Tesoro arrived at the Houston Zoo as a young cub in 2015 and quickly captured the hearts of guests, staff, and volunteers with his striking beauty, energetic confidence, and remarkable strength. <\/p>\n

Over the years, he became a guest favorite and an ambassador for jaguar conservation, inspiring countless visitors. <\/p>\n

Tesoro\u2019s legacy lives on through his offspring, including Tesoro\u2019s seven-month-old cub, Rojo. Through them, Tesoro\u2019s story will continue to inspire future generations of animal lovers and conservationists. <\/p>\n

The Houston Zoo remains committed to honoring Tesoro\u2019s life by continuing its efforts in jaguar conservation through Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE): Jaguars, a program focused on saving jaguars in Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary in Belize. The Zoo provides support to help fund local rangers who patrol the critical habitat, working to reduce illegal activities like poaching.<\/p>\n
