{"id":20471,"date":"2025-06-28T00:49:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T00:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/20471\/"},"modified":"2025-06-28T00:49:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T00:49:09","slug":"socialist-nyc-mayoral-contender-zohran-mamdani-wants-to-hike-property-taxes-for-richer-and-whiter-neighborhoods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/20471\/","title":{"rendered":"Socialist NYC mayoral contender Zohran Mamdani wants to hike property taxes for &#8216;richer and whiter neighborhoods&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani wants to hike property taxes for \u201cricher and whiter neighborhoods\u201d in an eyebrow-raising proposal that aims to ease the burden on homeowners in the outer boroughs.<\/p>\n<p>The soak-the-rich proposal is buried in Mamdani\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1iGn9ws9Ds0x_3kkB1tdM2pxLlbkPtT0k\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">campaign platform<\/a> that calls to fix the city\u2019s notoriously skewed property tax system, in which ritzy brownstones are hit at lower rates than homes and rentals in lower-income neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShift the tax burden from overtaxed homeowners in the outer boroughs to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods,\u201d the proposal reads.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic nominee for New York City Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, plans to hike property taxes has drawn some concern that it will tax \u201cricher and whiter neighborhoods.\u201d ZUMAPRESS.com<\/p>\n<p>Democrats and many Republicans have long pushed to fix the out-of-whack system that ends up hitting poorer, often largely black and brown neighborhoods, with higher property taxes than their neighbors in swanky areas that\u00a0tend to be majority Caucasian.<\/p>\n<p>But Mamdani\u2019s specific mention of \u201cwhiter,\u201d wealthier neighborhoods drew outrage from some observers. Many right-wing commentators accused Mamdani, who would be the city\u2019s first mayor of South Asian descent if elected, of targeting white New Yorkers, with one labeling him a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EricLDaugh\/status\/1938392921348198548\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">RACIST<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>City Councilman David Carr (R-Staten Island), who\u2019s part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/politics\/2022\/06\/si-republicans-join-nyc-progressives-to-call-for-property-tax-reform.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">bipartisan push<\/a> to reform the property tax system, said Mamdani should tone down the \u201crhetoric\u201d if he\u2019s going to help tackle a very real imbalance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe objective of our reforms is to make our property tax system fairer and more transparent and to ensure that middle- and working-class homeowners aren\u2019t subsidizing lower taxes for wealthy property owners,\u201d Carr said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about blaming people based on race or class or political affiliation, and if Zohran Mamdani wants to come on board, then he should drop the divisive rhetoric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, 33, a two-term Queens assemblyman, pulled off a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/24\/us-news\/andrew-cuomo-concedes-as-zohran-mamdani-wins-nyc-mayoral-primary-in-stunning-upset\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stunning upset<\/a> in Tuesday\u2019s ranked-choice Democratic mayoral primary, trouncing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in first-pick votes after running an <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/09\/us-news\/socialist-mayoral-candidate-zohran-mamdani-plans-for-major-corporate-tax-hikes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unabashedly socialist campaign<\/a> focused on affordability.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s tangled property tax rules are the result of a 50-year-old court decision, a subsequent state law setting assessment caps to prevent middle-class owners from being taxed out of their homes and a complicated set of overlapping rules.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal is a part of Mamdani\u2019s campaign platform in a call to fix the tax system currently in place in the Big Apple. ZUMAPRESS.com<\/p>\n<p>The result is a system where \u201csmall homeowners in Brooklyn and Queens can pay a higher tax rate than owners of luxury co-ops on 5th Avenue in Manhattan,\u201d the pro-reform group <a href=\"https:\/\/taxequitynow.nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tax Equity Now points out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tax Equity Now New York filed a still-ongoing lawsuit against the city in 2017 that argued the process unfairly taxes renters and homeowners in lower-income neighborhoods compared to wealthier areas.<\/p>\n<p>Predominantly black neighborhoods such as Canarsie and East New York face higher effective tax rates than others that are largely white, a <a href=\"https:\/\/smhttp-ssl-58547.nexcesscdn.net\/nycss\/images\/uploads\/pubs\/031425_CSS_TaxReport_it_V2_%281%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">recent study<\/a> by the Community Service Society found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no good reason why homeowners in Cambria Heights, a residential community that is 90% Black, should pay an effective tax rate that is double those paid by homeowners in Park Slope or East Village, which are 62% and 50% White, respectively,\u201d the study states.<\/p>\n<p>The meat of Mamdani\u2019s proposal calls to remove artificial caps on assessments \u2014 a solution pushed by advocates and lawmakers across the political spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal states, \u201cShift the tax burden from overtaxed homeowners in the outer boroughs to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods.\u201d ZUMAPRESS.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mayor can fix this by pushing class assessment percentages down for everyone and adjusting rates up, effectively lowering tax payments for homeowners in neighborhoods like Jamaica and Brownsville while raising the amount paid in the most expensive Brooklyn brownstones,\u201d the proposal states.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s campaign didn\u2019t respond to The Post\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>But many New Yorkers in affluent neighborhoods weren\u2019t happy about their property taxes potentially going up.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Centola, a 73-year old retiree, has rented on the Upper East Side for 30 years, but still opposes redistributing wealth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s the thing, I\u2019m wealthy, I don\u2019t want my wealth redistributed,\u201d he told The Post Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work for my money, why should I give it away?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another Upper East Sider \u2014 Shanice Gilbert, 33, a college assistant \u2014 noted not everyone in her hifalutin neighborhood is rich.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot everybody here is wealthy, how is that going to work?\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a mixed environment, it\u2019s a very diverse environment. How are you going to do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cam Macdonald, general counsel for the Empire Center, said as mayor, Mamdani could adjust the percentages, if he\u2019s elected in November.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKeep up with today\u2019s most important news\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStay up on the very latest with Evening Update.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>But Macdonald argued Mamdani\u2019s campaign needs to show their math for how it will affect the city\u2019s revenue \u2014 of which more than 30% is derived from property taxes.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal, he noted, also \u201cdoes nothing to fix the structural issues under state law that have led to the disparities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s proposal has drawn outrage from some. ZUMAPRESS.com<\/p>\n<p>Other planks of Mamdani\u2019s proposal \u2014 including \u201ccircuit breakers\u201d to make sure low- and moderate-income homeowners aren\u2019t burdened, and to stop treating co-ops and condos as if they were rentals \u2014 concede that the state legislature would need to make those changes, not the mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Kenny Burgos, CEO of the New York Apartment Association representing rent-stabilized apartment owners, has been an outspoken critic of Mamdani\u2019s promise to freeze rents on those dwellings.<\/p>\n<p>But he said the issue of property taxes might be an area of common ground for his group and Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA reform of property taxes would be absolutely instrumental in saving this housing,\u201d he said of rent-stabilized homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn property taxes, I think he would have some strange bedfellows here. I think there are many many outer-borough elected officials who have this issue and have found not enough support to actually make meaningful change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Park Slope woman, who lives in a $3 million brownstone, told The Post she agrees with Mamdani even if her \u201cmodest\u201d $5,000-a-year taxes rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrivate homeowners have a real deal,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people in co-ops and condos get hammered. I\u2019m all for it.
