Bexar County has amassed a backlog of 34,000 unprocessed voter registrations, county commissioners said at a Tuesday meeting.<\/p>\n

The backlog stems from the county\u2019s outdated registration system,\u00a0Votech, whose maker went out business, Texas Public Radio reports<\/a>. The county is now struggling to integrate Votech with others systems statewide.<\/p>\n

At Tuesday\u2019s meeting, the commissioners voted to replace the old system so the county can address its backlog prior to the November election. Republican Precinct 3 Commissioner Grant Moody was the sole holdout against the upgrade, according to TPR.<\/p>\n

The new system, called VR Systems, will cost the county $2 million dollars.
Most smaller Texas counties use TEAM, or the Texas Election Administration Management system. However, Travis County has also experienced trouble integrating its system with TEAM, TPR reports.<\/p>\n

The radio station didn\u2019t mention what registration system Travis County uses. The Current reached out to the Travis County Tax Office for specifics on its system but got no response by press time late Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Moody opposes replacing Votech because he anticipates the county will join with the state\u2019s TEAM system by November, according to TPR.<\/p>\n

However, Precinct 4 County Commissioner Tommy Calvert, one four Democrats on Commissioners Court, said time is of the essence while the registration backlog continues to build.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just see this as a very important tool to keep our elections department processing the registrations and all those groups we\u2019ve supported financially with voter registration activity,\u201d he said. \u201cTheir work is for naught, and we risk liability at getting a lawsuit against us at this very moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
