Broad St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19130<br \/>215-765-9000<\/p>\n<p>Join a community org<\/p>\n<p>Outside of state- or city-affiliated agencies are a host of grassroots community organizations that cater to older adults.<\/p>\n<p>For most nonprofits and advocacy groups, volunteer support is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe operate on a skeleton staff,\u201d said SCS community services director Smith. \u201cOur organization thrives on volunteers. We couldn\u2019t do it without them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith also cautioned would-be volunteers: \u201cWhatever you think you know about senior centers: forget about it. I call them \u2018country clubs for older adults.\u2019 They are alive and full of energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at aging-related nonprofits and support groups in the Philadelphia area, and how you can get involved:<\/p>\n<p>Bucks County Opportunity Council<\/p>\n<p>Every week, volunteers at Bristol\u2019s HELP Center sort, pack and deliver food to seniors unable to leave their homes. Those interested may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.signupgenius.com\/go\/10c0e44a4af2ca6f49-help1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sign up to volunteer through Bucks County Opportunity Council<\/a> online.<\/p>\n<p>Bucks County Positively Aging<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buckscounty.gov\/293\/Positively-Aging-Volunteer-Program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Positively Aging<\/a> volunteers in Bucks County offer help in a few areas, including insurance counseling, health and wellness programs and nutrition services.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers are also needed to deliver meals from community centers to older adults unable to leave their homes, with the greatest need in Falls Township, Feasterville, Trevose and Bensalem.<\/p>\n<p>Those interested in volunteering may contact BCAAA at 267-880-5700.<\/p>\n<p>CARIE<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interest of the Elderly, based out of Philadelphia, provides direct assistance to older adults and their caregivers.<\/p>\n<p>CARIE volunteers may accompany crime victims to court, assess long-term care resident complaints, educate older adults about Medicare, offer administrative assistance, assist with special event planning and provide professional support (e.g. accounting, public relations\/communications, legal support, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Those interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carie.org\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volunteering for CARIE<\/a> may submit an inquiry online or call 215-545-5728 or 1-800-356-8606.<\/p>\n<p>Lutheran Settlement House<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lutheransettlement.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lutheran Settlement House<\/a> in Fishtown, the Center for Older Adults caters to those 55 and older through fitness and dance classes, health coaching, creative arts and other programming.\u00a0 LSH volunteers help support the organization by preparing groceries for food pantries, participating in activities with older adults, organizing donation drives and more.<\/p>\n<p>Those interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lutheransettlement.org\/get-involved\/volunteer-opportunities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volunteering at Lutheran Settlement House<\/a> may fill out an interest form online.<\/p>\n<p>Meals on Wheels of Chester County<\/p>\n<p>The Chester County chapter of Meals on Wheels covers about 85% of the county\u2019s population, nonprofit officials say. The nonprofit provides residents who are unable to leave the home, including older adults, with a hot lunch five days a week.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers generally deliver meals on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Those interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/mowcc.org\/sign-up-to-deliver-meals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volunteering at Meals on Wheels of Chester County<\/a> may sign up online.<\/p>\n<p>MOWCC also accepts donations of handmade items like cards, ornaments and snack bags to be delivered to clients alongside their meals.
