Then she was evacuated to Italy for medical treatment, along with six Palestinian children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-MNEWVAK4LNBM3HHMLHD7DFW5Z4\">A striking photo of Shamm wincing in her mother&#8217;s arms, with her hair matted and ribs protruding from her chest, was taken by Associated Press freelance journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/08\/27\/gaza-journalists-killed-mariam-dagga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/08\/27\/gaza-journalists-killed-mariam-dagga\/\">Mariam Dagga<\/a>, just days before the child left Gaza on August 13. It was one of Ms Dagga&#8217;s last images. She was among 22 people killed in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/08\/26\/israelis-begin-day-of-protests-to-demand-gaza-hostage-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/08\/26\/israelis-begin-day-of-protests-to-demand-gaza-hostage-deal\/\">August 25 Israeli strike<\/a> on the same hospital in southern Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-63UHP6BPZFBABK277KZJDJ3OK4\">More than half a million people in Gaza, a quarter of the population, are experiencing catastrophic levels of hunger because of the blockade and continuing military operations, the world&#8217;s leading authority on hunger crises said last month. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/08\/26\/gaza-city-families-face-impossible-choices-famine-and-war-or-fleeing-into-the-unknown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/08\/26\/gaza-city-families-face-impossible-choices-famine-and-war-or-fleeing-into-the-unknown\/\">Gaza city<\/a>, in the north, is experiencing famine, it said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Malnourished from birth<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-C3QHVC75V5FTXKK6TY4QSMCHB4\">By this week, Shamm was sitting up, alert in a hospital crib in Naples, her fine blonde hair pulled into a high ponytail. She wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the word \u201ccute\u201d. Her wide eyes gleamed as her older sister and mother called her name from across the room, and she broke into a smile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-I6NRTU4Y6RAZFMMJ3LTAUBYPSM\">Weighing around 4kg when she arrived in Italy, Shamm was \u201cin a serious and challenging clinical state,\u201d said Dr Daniele de Brasi, a paediatric genetic disease specialist who is treating her at Santobono Pausilipon Children\u2019s Hospital in Naples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-AT6MBV52URFPFJAAP6IO54LEYY\">She now weighs 5.5kg, which is still no more than half of the median weight for a child of her age, Dr de Brasi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-KEQAAG5IIBDB5DIRERRBFJUJGU\">The doctor said \u201ca big part\u201d of her undernourishment was due to a genetic metabolic disease called glycogen storage disease, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients, particularly carbohydrates, and can cause muscle weakness and impede growth. The condition is primarily managed through a high-carbohydrate diet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-Z45JEH6F6BGQNMOFFIXBIKFPBQ\">So far, \u201cWe are very satisfied with her progress,\u2019\u2019 Dr de Brasi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-ESRJ2NAOERAUZPXEAONGT4FCLI\">Shamm suffered from malnutrition from birth, just weeks before the October 7, 2023 attack in which Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took another 251 hostage. Forty-eight hostages are still in Gaza, around 20 of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were returned in ceasefires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-GBS75XYUAREGNENK3SOA7MAJUQ\">Israel responded with an offensive that Gaza health officials say has killed more than 64,000 Palestinians in nearly two years of fighting. The Gaza Health Ministry does not say how many were civilians or combatants but that around half of those killed were women and children.<\/p>\n<p><b>No food or treatment<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-O46QQ2QDOBC77LMC2Z2RXYA4IA\">The family was forced to move more than a dozen times, and Shamm\u2019s mother, Islam, struggled to get her proper medical care, visiting many hospitals and clinics. Doctors suspected the rare condition but could not test for it, much less treat it properly. They sometimes offered antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-ZCGMK6DQMZFFHHLYSN5QKRD2RU\">\u201cIt became worse as a result of the lack of food, treatment and possibilities,&#8221; Islam said in an interview with Shamm resting on her shoulder. \u201cWe have been displaced maybe about 15 times, from tent to tent. We walked long distances and, along the way, it was hot, and the sun was hitting us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-VDRVWYJ2VNBGFK5BVJYJWZ7YVI\">For a while, doctors administered a special formula, but Shamm would not take it, having lost the habit of drinking milk after supplies in Gaza became scarce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-LWK52E6XY5H7BEGTVUZFGOIDRQ\">The UN warned last month that starvation and malnutrition in Gaza are at the highest levels since the war began. Nearly 12,000 children under five were found to have acute malnutrition in July \u2013 including more than 2,500 with severe malnutrition, the most dangerous level. The World Health Organisation says the numbers are likely an undercount.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" _id=\"TJMRXCRX4VE6PGPYIEJWMJZSXU\" type=\"image\" originalheight=\"1350\" alt=\"\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"low\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/TJMRXCRX4VE6PGPYIEJWMJZSXU.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-365BNRZB2NF4JMZDLIQGLGG2Y4\">It was at Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis that Dagga photographed Shamm for the last time on August 9. During the visit, Shamm cried in pain in her hospital bed. Her arms, legs and ribs were skeletal, her belly swollen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-23-E4MJFEZSCFHQHEU3TP6TMKQIWA\">Islam had gone to school with Ms Dagga, who visited the hospital, and remembered her fondly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-24-L4LSRLZ76ZDVVBFHS3EGG3LP6U\">\u201cShe was always coming to the hospital to check on me and Shamm\u201d, right up to the day of their departure for Italy, Islam said. \u201cShe stayed until the last step of the stairs to say goodbye to me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-25-W5LLE5GKJ5BXDD4RTAX52BP7ZE\">After arriving in Italy, Islam learnt that Ms Dagga had died in an attack that killed four other journalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-26-RNE7YCTJWZBHZLQDKYRLUYA4Y4\">&#8220;I was upset when I heard and knew that she had died,&#8221; Islam said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-27-DEDLUWV57JCRFL6HS6R4NNNZGE\">Shamm is among 181 Palestinian children being treated in Italy, according to the Italian Foreign Ministry. About one-third of those have arrived since March, when Israel ended a ceasefire with Hamas and imposed the two-and-half-month blockade on all imports, including food and medicine.<\/p>\n<p><b>500 calories a day<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-29-F5GRTKEILJFEHC3ROAAJFFZ3GI\">Israel denies there is starvation in Gaza, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/07\/29\/worst-case-scenario-of-famine-unfolding-in-gaza-watchdog-warns-as-war-death-toll-crosses-60000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/07\/29\/worst-case-scenario-of-famine-unfolding-in-gaza-watchdog-warns-as-war-death-toll-crosses-60000\/\">accounts to the contrary<\/a> from witnesses, UN agencies and experts. It says it allowed enough aid to enter before and after the tightened blockade and has allowed increased supplies in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-30-G26MLCQG6NEWVB3QI7T74PQTEM\">In Naples, Shamm now has a feeding tube in her nose to ensure she gets the right mix of nutrients overnight. Doctors aim to remove the tube in about a month. During the day, she is free to eat solid food, including meat and fish. A cornerstone of her diet is the carbohydrate-rich porridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-31-VIOTOKWQ35CBHBJJJDS2VUEAEY\">Her current intake is around 500 calories a day, which doctors are gradually increasing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-32-HIT3JCMXEZCZPDGKKQS5RWI34Y\">&#8220;In these cases, growing too fast can cause problems,&#8221; Dr de Brasi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-33-2EOBDFXXT5CVRDGFDPD4DSORAM\">Her 10-year-old sister, Judi, was brought to Italy as an accompanying family member, and doctors began treating her after noting that she was at least three or four kilograms underweight, Dr de Brasi said. She has gained 2kg and is in good condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-34-TVKAQT7O5ZHHLFN2YY5Y75F3JE\">With both daughters improving, Shamm\u2019s mother is allowing herself to experience relief. But it is too soon to think about going back to Gaza, where Shamm&#8217;s father is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-35-VMUUIYQWABADJIGQ6O7KGVNLOI\">\u201cNow there is no way to go back, as long as the war is going on. For the UK Tier 1 Innovator Visa, you are required to invest \u00a350,000 (Dh238,000) into a business. You can also get a UK Tier 1 Investor Visa if you invest \u00a32 million, \u00a35m or \u00a310m (the higher the investment, the sooner you obtain your permanent residency).<\/p>\n<p>All UK residency visas get approved in 90 to 120 days and are valid for 3 years. After 3 years, the applicant can apply for extension of another 2 years. Once they have lived in the UK for a minimum of 6 months every year, they are eligible to apply for permanent residency (called Indefinite Leave to Remain). After one year of ILR, the applicant can apply for UK passport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Caribbean<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Depending on the country, the investment amount starts from $100,000 (Dh367,250) and can go up to $400,000 in real estate.\u00a0From the date of purchase, it will take between four to five months to receive a passport.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Portugal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The investment amount ranges from \u20ac350,000 to \u20ac500,000 (Dh1.5m\u00a0to Dh2.16m) in real estate.\u00a0From the date of purchase, it will take a maximum of six months to receive a Golden Visa. Applicants can apply for permanent residency after five years and Portuguese citizenship after six years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong European countries with residency programmes, Portugal has been the most popular because it offers the most cost-effective programme to eventually acquire citizenship of the European Union without ever residing in Portugal,\u201d states Veronica Cotdemiey\u00a0of Citizenship Invest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The real estate investment threshold to acquire residency for Greece is \u20ac250,000, making it the cheapest real estate residency visa scheme in Europe. You can apply for residency in four months and citizenship after seven years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The real estate investment threshold to acquire residency for Spain is \u20ac500,000. You can apply for permanent residency after five years and citizenship after 10 years. It is not necessary to live in Spain to retain and renew the residency visa permit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cyprus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cyprus offers the quickest route to citizenship of a European country in only six months. An investment of \u20ac2m in real estate is required, making it the highest priced programme in Europe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Malta<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Malta citizenship by investment programme\u00a0is lengthy and investors are required to contribute sums as donations to the Maltese government. The applicant must either contribute at least \u20ac650,000 to the National Development &amp; Social Fund. Spouses and children are required to contribute \u20ac25,000; unmarried children between 18 and 25 and dependent parents must contribute \u20ac50,000 each.<\/p>\n<p>The second step is to make an investment in property of at least \u20ac350,000 or enter a property rental contract for at least \u20ac16,000 per annum for five years. The third step is to invest at least \u20ac150,000 in bonds or shares approved by the Maltese government to be kept for at least five years.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates must commit to a minimum physical presence in Malta before citizenship is granted. While you get residency in two months, you can apply for citizenship after a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A one-year residency permit can be bought if you purchase property in Egypt worth $100,000.
