(ABC News: Hugo Hodge)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But 4,000 kilometres away, on Australia&#8217;s north-west coast, another so-called &#8220;lucky reef&#8221; bears a warning for Palauans looking to conserve their marine environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Molecular ecologist Kate Quigley is running coral-assisted evolution experiments on Ningaloo Reef, which until recently had also escaped many of the worst impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-12\/ningaloo-western-australia-catastrophic-bleaching-event\/105620504\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WA&#8217;s &#8216;catastrophic&#8217; bleaching event<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">In Western Australia, the damage to coral reefs including the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo has eclipsed any previous bleaching events.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ningaloo&#8217;s reefs have much in common with those in Palau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They are in environmental conditions that are buffering some of that heat,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We thought that Ningaloo was a reef like that.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But it fell victim to the recent global marine heatwave, suffering a &#8220;catastrophic&#8221; bleaching event, its worst on record and the first in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Ningaloo shows us this year that it&#8217;s only a matter of time for even those lucky reefs,&#8221; Dr Quigley says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australia is now investing big in coral-assisted evolution to help its reefs survive marine heatwaves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This kind of selective breeding work has really started to ramp up in the last few years, mostly because people have seen their [other] restoration efforts fail,&#8221; Dr Quigley says.<\/p>\n<p>Buying time for the world&#8217;s reefs<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The work is slow going, and PICRC&#8217;s corals take as many as six to eight years to grow into big colonies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Their research shows it is feasible to use selectively-bred &#8220;super corals&#8221; for conservation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, there are doubts they&#8217;re being deployed fast enough and can withstand increasingly severe marine heatwaves into the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When I talk with other scientists we know that we are not there yet,&#8221; Dr Alessi says.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It is feasible, it&#8217;s a lot of work, but we need more people doing this because we are running out of time.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Coral reef managers are focused now on scaling up these methods and making it more cost effective to address the urgent crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In Australia, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation has an ambitious goal of planting 10 million heat tolerant corals annually across 100 priority reefs by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Someone outside the shot holds a syringe in a tub full of water and small green round items.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/3e694aac511c46d5a3a402b5b1c2e4fa\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A coral spa at the Palau International Coral Reef Centre, which is leading efforts to breed &#8220;super corals&#8221;. (ABC News: Hugo Hodge)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Modelling from Newcastle University and the University of Queensland shows natural selection could save corals if global warming is limited to a maximum of 2C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But last year was the hottest on record with <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-13\/a-year-above-1-5c-what-does-it-really-mean\/104774364\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105734286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temperatures exceeding 1.5C<\/a> and the world has already lost 30 to 50 per cent of its coral reefs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s not science fiction to imagine a future where Palau&#8217;s corals are transplanted onto reefs around the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-03\/great-barrier-reef-recovery-water-quality\/105724044\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Experts sound alarm over under-pressure Great Barrier Reef<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Experts are calling for more focus on Great Barrier Reef water quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There have also been promising advancements in the Caribbean where scientists successfully crossbred corals from Honduras and Florida in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But most coral experts are clear-eyed about how to solve the crisis facing reefs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s really important that we don&#8217;t greenwash these kinds of methods and that we&#8217;re very clear that this is going to give us a little bit more time, but it is not the long-term solution,&#8221; Dr Quigley says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The world&#8217;s oceans are absorbing an estimated 90 per cent of the excess heat from human-induced global warming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The long-term solution is emissions reductions,&#8221; Dr Quigley says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Singeo is sceptical that human intervention will save her country&#8217;s reefs \u2014 but hopes Palau&#8217;s heat resistant corals are a sign they can adapt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Nature has its own way of caring for itself that is beyond us humans,&#8221;
