As any Google search will show, Gordon Ramsay is as synonymous with Hell\u2019s Kitchen as Alicia Keys, Marvel Comics \u2014 and W42ST. Now, those ties could get a brick-and-mortar address. The fiery chef has thrown his support behind the proposed Caesars Palace Times Square casino, which is still winding its way through a high-stakes approval process. If the bid succeeds, Ramsay is ready to bring one of his restaurants to the heart of Times Square. We caught up with him to find out why he\u2019s backing Caesars\u2019 gamble and what it might mean for the neighborhood that shares a name with his famous brand.<\/p>\n

Gordon Ramsay still remembers his first trip to New York. It was New Year\u2019s Eve 1999, and he and his wife Tana jumped on a plane to celebrate with Daniel Boulud. \u201cNew York\u2019s always been a huge source of inspiration,\u201d he told W42ST. \u201cThe sort of closeness it has with Glasgow, London \u2014 that competitive edge. We were brought here early with the Savoy Group \u2026 and you get your first real insight into how competitive, how feisty a city it is. It clearly doesn\u2019t sleep, but, man, it keeps you on your toes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chef who turned Hell\u2019s Kitchen into a global TV juggernaut and fine-casual brand is eyeing his boldest Manhattan move yet: joining the Caesars Palace Times Square bid with a new restaurant. He\u2019s not settled on the concept \u2014 Ramsay\u2019s Kitchen, Gordon Ramsay Steak, or the full \u201cHell\u2019s Kitchen\u201d experience are all on the table \u2014 but the pull of our neighborhood is obvious. \u201cHell\u2019s Kitchen would be a dream\u2026 The steakhouse too \u2014 I\u2019ve really understood and mastered how well they do steakhouses in America, it\u2019s theater,\u201d he said, before flashing the line: \u201cBut come on \u2014 Hell\u2019s Kitchen. Rub your shoulders with Hell\u2019s Kitchen, man, that\u2019d be like a pig in shit, Phil.\u201d<\/p>\n

The name that made him a household figure started far from 9th Avenue. \u201cOne of the ITV producers said, \u2018Gordon\u2019s going to hell with a bunch of celebrities \u2014 let\u2019s call it Hell\u2019s Kitchen and go for it,\u2019\u201d he recalled of the 2004 UK series \u2014 broadcast live for 16 nights. \u201cAbsolute hell,\u201d he laughed. \u201cWithin a week of that series going out, Fox phoned and said, \u2018We want Hell\u2019s Kitchen in America\u2019\u2026 That was the birth of Hell\u2019s Kitchen on Fox.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Ramsay, the words never felt like branding so much as biography. \u201cHell\u2019s Kitchen for me is very similar to the sort of streets in Port Glasgow, Greenock, Gourock and Dennistoun where I grew up,\u201d he said. \u201cThat sort of nitty gritty, real graft. You were unspoiled, grateful for everything you got, and you complained about zero.\u201d<\/p>\n

He does get to walk our streets \u2014 stealthily. \u201cI always put my baseball cap on, glasses, scarf around my neck, and refuse to open my mouth so no one recognizes me,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I spoke, everyone would know instantly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Times Square is already part of his New York story. In late 2022, he opened Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips just off the Crossroads of the World<\/a>. \u201cIt got off to a great start,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s quintessentially a tiny little kiosk. We do a lot of to-go there\u2026 It\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ramsay\u2019s relationship with Caesars runs deep. He grinned at the memory of choosing Las Vegas for his wife\u2019s milestone celebration this year: \u201cEven on the eve of her 50th birthday at Caesars Palace, I still managed to squeeze in a tasting. I can\u2019t help myself.\u201d He\u2019s been working with the company for years \u2014 Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Las Vegas opened in 2011, then came Gordon Ramsay Burger and Gordon Ramsay Hell\u2019s Kitchen in front of Caesars Palace in 2018 \u2014 and he\u2019s still tickled by how the burger skeptics were proved wrong. \u201cThey said, \u2018You\u2019ll last two weeks \u2014 what Brit\u2019s gonna cook a burger in Vegas?\u2019 We did a beautiful blend of chuck, brisket and rib\u2026 brushed with Devonshire butter\u2026 Two and a half thousand burgers a day later,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the busiest spots on the Strip.\u201d<\/p>\n

What would Caesars Palace Times Square mean for New York? He doesn\u2019t shy from the debate. \u201cSome will be skeptical and say it\u2019s an intrusion,\u201d he acknowledged. \u201cBut what that will do to surrounding businesses and the footfall in that area will reignite excitement. It is a bit of a holy grail, a landmark address\u2026 every decade, every 15 years, it needs oxygen, it needs revival, and I think we can do that in abundance, especially with something as iconic as Caesars Palace.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s sentiment baked into it, too. \u201cGrowing up\u2026 watching those early fights on a black-and-white TV in a council estate \u2014 \u2018live from Caesars Palace\u2019 \u2014 that was just a dream,\u201d he said. Planting that brand at the center of New York \u201cwill be like one of the most impeccable tides coming in and floating everything else up around us, because the knock-on effect will be incredible.\u201d And the partnership appeals to his sense of service: \u201cThey give so much back\u2026 If we can do that for some of those neighborhoods surrounding Times Square, that\u2019s the legacy, the torch we can ignite.\u201d<\/p>\n

He bristles \u2014 warmly \u2014 at the \u201ccelebrity chef\u201d tag. \u201cTrust you to kick off with a question that kicks me right in the nuts,\u201d he joked when I asked if that\u2019s what he is now. The answer that followed was classic Ramsay: self-aware and dead serious about restaurants. \u201cI always think of the TV chefs in the \u201990s \u2014 behind those personas there were no restaurants. I came from a restaurant background and mastered my craft\u2026 Restaurants are where I\u2019m happiest.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

That craft obsession, he argues, is why the concept \u2014 steakhouse, Ramsay\u2019s Kitchen or Hell\u2019s Kitchen \u2014 will matter less than execution if Caesars wins. \u201cNew York breeds incredible excitement, coupled with toughness, resilience beyond belief,\u201d he said, musing about the great American steakhouse tradition and name-checking the sizzle of piping-hot plates and no-fuss service. \u201cIt\u2019s theater\u2026 and we can deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a cultural to-do list, too. Ramsay hasn\u2019t yet seen Hell\u2019s Kitchen, Alicia Keys\u2019 Broadway musical inspired by the neighborhood, but he plans to be in town in November for a double birthday (his and daughter Tilly\u2019s) and hopes to catch it then: \u201cHell\u2019s Kitchen is definitely on the list.\u201d<\/p>\n

However the casino bid unfolds, Ramsay presents like a chef who wants to be judged by the room he builds and the plate he sends. \u201cI never put the dollar in front of ambition,\u201d he said. \u201cIf there\u2019s one thing I\u2019ve understood in America, it\u2019s how to bring that energy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

For the record \u2014 and because you\u2019ll ask \u2014 he still punctuates his sentences like Gordon Ramsay. Count them up, and our brisk 20-minute Zoom included 11 variations on his favorite four-letter garnish. It\u2019s not the only reason New Yorkers know his voice a block away.
