President Donald Trump threatened Chicago<\/a> with his newly-renamed \u201cDepartment of War\u201d on Saturday, prompting anger from city and state officials who have been preparing for a looming deployment of National Guard troops to the city for weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I love the smell of deportations in the morning\u2026\u2019 Chicago is about to find out why it\u2019s called the Department of War,\u201d Trump\u2019s post on Truth Social said<\/a>, accompanied by what appeared to be an AI-generated depiction of himself as Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore from the 1979 Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now. The words \u201cChicopolyse Now\u201d were emblazoned on the image, a reference to Apocalypse Now, and the background showed a burning city and helicopters flying away.<\/p>\n

The post prompted anger from state and city officials. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker called Trump a \u201cwannabe dictator\u201d and took the post as a threat to \u201cgo to war\u201d with Chicago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President of the United States is threatening to go to war with an American city,\u201d Pritzker wrote on X<\/a>. \u201cThis is not a joke. This is not normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDonald Trump isn’t a strongman, he’s a scared man. Illinois won\u2019t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson accused Trump of \u201cauthoritarianism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President\u2019s threats are beneath the honor of our nation, but the reality is that he wants to occupy our city and break our Constitution,\u201d he wrote on X<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The post follows Trump\u2019s Friday executive order <\/a>that rebranded the Department of Defense as the Department of War, a move the president claimed sent \u201ca message of strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said during the press conference Friday that the name indicates the department is “going to go on offense, not just on defense. Maximum lethality, not tepid legality. Violent effect, not politically correct.”<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s threats against Chicago follow his decision to federalize<\/a> D.C.\u2019s police department and deploy National Guard troops on the streets on Aug. 11, citing violent crime\u2014even though data showed that violent crime in the nation\u2019s capital had already been declining significantly<\/a>. Since then, the President has threatened similar deployments in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Baltimore, and Oakland.<\/p>\n

Johnson and Pritzker have both been staunchly opposed to Trump\u2019s threats of federal intervention<\/a>. Last weekend, Johnson signed an executive order<\/a> directing the city\u2019s police force not to cooperate with federal agents in a potential crackdown on crime and immigration.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will protect our constitution. We will protect our city. And we will protect our people. We do not want to see tanks in our streets. We do not want to see families ripped apart,\u201d Johnson said as he announced his executive order.<\/p>\n
