WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump<\/a> on Saturday amplified his promises to send National Guard troops and immigration agents<\/a> to Chicago by posting a parody image from \u201cApocalypse Now\u201d featuring a ball of flames as helicopters zoom over the nation\u2019s second-largest city. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I love the smell of deportations in the morning,\u2019\u201d Trump wrote on his social media site. \u201cChicago about to find out why it\u2019s called the Department of WAR.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president offered no details beyond the label \u201cChipocalypse Now,\u201d a play on the title of Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s dystopian 1979 film set in the Vietnam war, in which a character says: \u201cI love the smell of napalm in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to the post, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat, called Trump a \u201cwannabe dictator.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump on Friday signed an executive order seeking to rename the Defense Department the Department of War, after months of campaigning to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. The renaming requires congressional approval.<\/p>\n

The illustration in Trump\u2019s post shows him against a backdrop of the Chicago skyline, wearing a hat matching that of the movie\u2019s war-loving and amoral Lt. Col. Kilgore, played by Robert Duvall.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s weekend post follows his repeated threats to add Chicago to the list of other Democratic-led cities he\u2019s targeted for expanded federal enforcement. His administration is set to step up immigration enforcement in Chicago, as it did in Los Angeles<\/a>, and deploy National Guard troops<\/a>. <\/p>\n

In addition to sending troops to Los Angeles<\/a> in June, Trump has deployed them since last month in Washington, as part of his unprecedented law enforcement takeover<\/a> of the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also suggested that Baltimore<\/a> and New Orleans<\/a> could get the same treatment, and on Friday even mentioned federal authorities possibly heading for Portland, Oregon, to \u201cwipe \u2019em out,\u201d meaning protesters. He could have been mistakenly describing video from demonstrations in that city years ago. <\/p>\n

Details about Trump\u2019s promised Chicago operation have been sparse, but there\u2019s already widespread opposition<\/a>. City and state leaders have said they plan to sue the Trump administration. Pritzker, a possible 2028 presidential candidate, is also fiercely opposed to it.<\/p>\n

The president \u201cis threatening to go to war with an American city,\u201d Pritzker wrote on X over an image of Trump\u2019s post. \u201cThis is not a joke. This is not normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cDonald Trump isn\u2019t a strongman, he\u2019s a scared man. Illinois won\u2019t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has suggested that he has nearly limitless powers when it comes to deploying the National Guard. At times he\u2019s even touched on questions about his being a dictator.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost people are saying, \u2018If you call him a dictator, if he stops crime, he can be whatever he wants\u2019 \u2014 I am not a dictator, by the way,\u201d Trump said last month. He added, \u201cNot that I don\u2019t have \u2014 I would \u2014 the right to do anything I want to do.\u201d <\/p>\n
