{"id":206240,"date":"2025-09-06T23:55:24","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T23:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/206240\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T23:55:24","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T23:55:24","slug":"91-year-old-houston-man-sings-to-wife-on-their-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/206240\/","title":{"rendered":"91-year-old Houston man sings to wife on their anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each year, Jerome Bourgouis sings &#8220;Wind Beneath My Wings&#8221; to Agnes, but the cherished tradition was nearly silenced by a vocal cord condition.<\/p>\n<p>HOUSTON \u2014 For 66 years, Jerome and Agnes Bourgouis have shared a life, a home and a song here in Houston.<\/p>\n<p>Every anniversary, he serenades his beautiful bride with their special song, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DOPbKqfD5pD\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">&#8220;Wind Beneath My Wings.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That tradition was nearly lost two years ago when Jerome was diagnosed with vocal cord atrophy, a condition that threatened to silence him forever.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the 91-year-old Army veteran and former member of the Houston Symphony chorus, music has always been his sanctuary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the pandemic, he sang from the balcony of his retirement community to lift the spirits of neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>So the threat of losing his voice was devastating.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, therapy at TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston helped Jerome reclaim his voice. Now, he&#8217;s back to singing on his balcony every morning and most importantly, serenading his beloved Agnes again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She now battles dementia, but her face lights up when Jerome sings to her.
