Fernando Tatís Jr. hit a three-run homer to cap the Padres’ six-run second inning, on the way to beating the Rockies 10-8 on Saturday and ending a five-game skid.

Randy Vásquez pitched six solid innings and Freddy Fermin, like Tatis, drove in three runs.

The Padres finally gained on the Dodgers, moving to within a game of the NL West lead after LA, up 3-0 with two outs in the ninth inning, lost 4-3 at Baltimore.

It’s been a perfect time for the Padres to gain ground on the Dodgers, now losers of five straight. Trouble is, the Friars kept losing too. Yet the stretch did not shake manager Mike Shildt’s belief in his club.

“We know what it takes to be successful and that’s really important,” he said.

Vasquez (4-6) put a stop to the losing streak, allowing three runs – two earned – in his first start since Aug. 15. Robert Suarez gave up a solo homer in the ninth before securing his NL-leading 36th save.

The Padres finished with 16 hits a night – Luis Arráez and Ryan O’Hearn had three apiece – after getting only three in a 3-0 loss. Five came against McCade Brown (0-3) in the second inning, and the Padres had five more in a four-run fifth.

Fermin had a two-run double before Tatís crushed his 20th home run in the second inning. Arráez added a two-run single in the fifth. Tatís’ single, also in the fifth, was the 700th hit of his career.

The Rockies rallied against Jeremiah Estrada in a four-run seventh, including a three-run shot by Jordan Beck, his 15th, to make it 10-7. Mason Miller restored order, giving up a hit and a walk in his inning-plus of work, though he had a scare.

Colorado had runners on the corners with one out in the eighth. But pinch-hitter Yánquiel Fernandez hit into an inning-ending double play.

Dylan Cease (6-11, 4.81 ERA) takes the mound Sunday against Tanner Gordon (5-5, 6.07).

First baseman Luis Arraez (4) hits a two-run single in the fifth inning during a game against the…

[5134
5229,1582,276,34547,43016,876,84403,3549,1306,7264,67,586,132,5230,68,2969
0":"post-206781","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-diego","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-ca","10":"tag-california","11":"tag-fernando-tatis-jr","12":"tag-luis-arraez","13":"tag-mike-shildt","14":"tag-nl-west","15":"tag-san-diego","16":"tag-san-diego-padres","17":"tag-sandiego","18":"tag-united-states","19":"tag-united-states-of-america","20":"tag-unitedstates","21":"tag-unitedstatesofamerica","22":"tag-us","23":"tag-usa
["GET
