{"id":206970,"date":"2025-09-07T06:35:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T06:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/206970\/"},"modified":"2025-09-07T06:35:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T06:35:09","slug":"liwag-eyes-redemption-leads-benildes-quest-to-end-25-year-ncaa-title-drought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/206970\/","title":{"rendered":"Liwag eyes redemption, leads Benilde&#8217;s quest to end 25-year NCAA title drought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>MANILA, Philippines<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 With NCAA Season 101 just around the corner, Allen Liwag, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) and Most Valuable Player (MVP), faces the daunting task of leading College of Saint Benilde to its aspirations in ending its 25-year title drought.\u00a0 \u2028<\/p>\n<p>Benilde made a finals appearance in the centennial year of the league, but failed to reach the promise land as the Mapua University Cardinals proved to be too much and swept the Best of Three championship series.\u2028<\/p>\n<p>Despite the saying &#8220;MVP curse&#8221; often preventing a player from winning a title, Liwag believes that all he has to do in the next season is\u2014follow coach Charles Tiu&#8217;s advice.\u2028 \u201cWhat coach always said to me is that my mindset [for] the next season should\u00a0be, \u2018I am the best player in the league,\u2019 but that should not take over\u00a0my character. What I will do is play the game, give my best, and do whatever it takes for the team,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u2028<\/p>\n<p>In Season 100, Liwag earned four prestigious awards, including a spot on the Mythical Five and the Defensive Team. All that happened in Season 100 and with my stint with SGA (Strong Group Athletics) reminded me that there\u2019s no such thing as an easy route.
