Ahead of the second postseason race, he joined Jeff Gluck\u2019s 12 Questions segment and peeled back a layer of his reputation.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"content\" data-variant=\"p\" id=\"article-content-block-2\" class=\"data-event\">Often cast as the laid-back, \u201chappy to be here\u201d racer because of his short-track roots, Berry pushed back on that label. \u201cAs a competitor, I\u2019m super competitive, super motivated, and have high expectations for myself and my team,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"content\" data-variant=\"p\" id=\"article-content-block-3\" class=\"data-event\">He reminded fans that anyone who raced him on the short tracks knows how fierce he was behind the wheel and how badly he wanted to win every race. That drive, he insists, is a major reason he and his team have tasted success. And it\u2019s the same demeanor he carries in the Cup Series as well.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"content\" data-variant=\"p\" id=\"article-content-block-4\" class=\"data-event\">The 34-year-old Hendersonville, Tennessee native added, \u201cPeople get enamored with my story, that I short-track raced for so long and finally got an opportunity, and they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, isn\u2019t it so great to be here? You made it. You\u2019re in the Cup Series now.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-type=\"content\" data-variant=\"p\" id=\"article-content-block-5\" class=\"data-event\">\u201cBut I don\u2019t view it as \u2018I\u2019m just happy to be here.\u2019 I want to be up front. I want to be competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"content\" data-variant=\"p\" id=\"article-content-block-6\" class=\"data-event\">Berry even laughed about how that competitiveness spills over at home, especially in games with his five-year-old daughter Mackenzie. Whether it\u2019s tic-tac-toe or a simple matching game, he admitted kids have a knack for it. \u201cIf she\u2019s locked in and paying attention, she will take me down,\u201d he <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6576477\/2025\/08\/27\/josh-berry-nascar-cup-series-playoffs-12-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-utm_source=\"article\" data-utm_medium=\"content\" data-utm_campaign=\"link\">said<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"content\" data-variant=\"p\" id=\"article-content-block-7\" class=\"data-event\">Now, with the No. 21 Ford buried at P16 in the standings and 19 points shy of advancing, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thesportsrush.com\/tag\/josh-berry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-utm_source=\"article\" data-utm_medium=\"content\" data-utm_campaign=\"link\">Berry<\/a><\/strong> faces an uphill climb. Gateway and Bristol will make or break his playoff run, and with a P36 finish in one Gateway start and an average of 17.7 across three Bristol races, he knows the margin for error has all but vanished.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"content\" data-variant=\"p\" id=\"article-content-block-8\" class=\"data-event\">Berry\u2019s playoff ticket came through a regular-season victory at Las Vegas, though his postseason hopes took an early hit with a 38th-place finish at Darlington in the Round of 16 opener.
