{"id":207567,"date":"2025-09-07T12:16:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T12:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/207567\/"},"modified":"2025-09-07T12:16:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T12:16:10","slug":"mets-remember-guardian-angel-davey-johnson-after-ex-managers-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/207567\/","title":{"rendered":"Mets remember &#8216;guardian angel&#8217; Davey Johnson after ex-manager&#8217;s death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CINCINNATI \u2014 The Mets of yesterday and today remembered a legend of the franchise Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>After Davey Johnson \u2014 who as a manager guided the Mets to their most recent World Series title in 1986 and as a player made the final out of the 1969 World Series to clinch the Mets\u2019 first championship \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/06\/sports\/legendary-mets-manager-davey-johnson-dead-at-82\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died on Friday at 82<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/06\/sports\/baseball-world-mourns-davey-johnson-after-mets-legends-death\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">memories poured in<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavey Johnson was the greatest manager I ever played for,\u201d Darryl Strawberry said in a statement released by the club. \u201cHe let us do our own thing. This is a sad day for the Mets and for the 1986 Mets family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davey Johnson is pictured in March 1987. AP<\/p>\n<p>Johnson led the team from 1984-90, highlighted by the \u201986 ring and 108 regular-season victories. <\/p>\n<p>He finished his Mets career with the best managerial record (595-417) in franchise history. <\/p>\n<p>His victories remain the most in Mets history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took a chance on me when I was 19,\u201d Dwight Gooden said. \u201cDavey wasn\u2019t afraid to make a tough decision. I know I wouldn\u2019t have had the career I did without him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout a doubt, he saved my career,\u201d said Keith Hernandez, whom Johnson named the first team captain in Mets history. \u201cHe let me be myself on the field. He knew when to be tough and when to take it easier. It was a joy playing for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson played for 13 years before managing the Mets, Reds, Orioles, Dodgers and Nationals for 17 seasons. <\/p>\n<p>Dwight Gooden is pictured in April 2024. Davey was my guardian angel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a chance\u201d Reed Garrett will be activated off the injured list Sunday, the first day he is eligible, Mendoza said before a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/06\/sports\/jonah-tong-sunk-by-three-rare-homers-in-mets-loss-to-reds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">6-3 loss to the Reds<\/a> at Great American Ball Park.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Garrett, who has been sidelined with right elbow inflammation, is with the team after throwing one scoreless inning in which he struck out two with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Mets wanted to see the shape of their bullpen before committing to Garrett returning Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Mets have stolen a base in eight consecutive games, their longest streak since stealing a base in 11 straight in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon Nimmo, who lifted a sacrifice fly in the third inning, saw his career-high-tying 11-game hitting streak snapped.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Siri played nine innings for the first time in his rehab assignment Saturday, going 1-for-5 with a home run and three strikeouts while playing center for Triple-A Syracuse.<\/p>\n<p>The defensively gifted outfielder has been out since April with a broken tibia and is \u201cgetting close,\u201d Mendoza said. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDelivering insights on all things Amazin\u2019s\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Mets by Mike Puma, exclusively on Sports+\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>But it did not sound as if Siri\u2019s activation is imminent, and the club still wants to see him play back-to-back games and build up his body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know he wants to get back here,\u201d Mendoza said of Siri, who has gone 7-for-23 in seven minor league games.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"CINCINNATI \u2014 The Mets of yesterday and today remembered a legend of the franchise Saturday.
