{"id":207767,"date":"2025-09-07T14:02:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T14:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/207767\/"},"modified":"2025-09-07T14:02:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T14:02:18","slug":"lapd-ends-its-role-in-kamala-harris-security-detail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/207767\/","title":{"rendered":"LAPD ends its role in Kamala Harris security detail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The security of former Vice President Kamala Harris, once the duty of the U.S. Secret Service, has been thrown into flux, again, days after President Trump canceled her federal protection.<\/p>\n<p>My colleague <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/people\/richard-winton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Winton<\/a> broke the news Saturday morning that the Los Angeles Police Department, which was assisting the California Highway Patrol in providing security for Harris, has been pulled off the detail after internal criticism of the arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s jump into what Winton wrote about this quickly-evolving story.<\/p>\n<p> Newsletter <\/p>\n<p class=\"module-title\">You&#8217;re reading the Essential California newsletter<\/p>\n<p class=\"module-description\">Our reporters guide you through the most important news, features and recommendations of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Enter email address   <\/p>\n<p> Sign Me Up   <\/p>\n<p class=\"module-disclaimer\"> You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. <\/p>\n<p>    What happened to Harris\u2019 Secret Service protection?<\/p>\n<p>Former vice presidents usually get Secret Service protection for six months after leaving office, while former presidents are given protection for life.<\/p>\n<p>But before his term ended in January, President Joe Biden signed an order to extend Harris\u2019 protection to July 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Aides to Harris had asked Biden for the extension. Without it, her security detail would have ended last month, according to sources.<\/p>\n<p>Trump ended that arrangement as of Monday.<\/p>\n<p>How did the CHP and LAPD get involved?<\/p>\n<p>Winton wrote Aug. 29 <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-08-29\/chp-protection-kamala-harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that California officials planned<\/a> to utilize the CHP as her security detail. Gov. Gavin Newsom, who was required to sign off on such CHP protection, would not confirm the arrangement. \u201cOur office does not comment on security arrangements,\u201d said Izzy Gordon, a spokesperson for Newsom. \u201cThe safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fox 11 broke the story of the use of LAPD officers earlier this week and got footage of the security detail outside Harris\u2019 Brentwood home from one of its news helicopters.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-09-04\/lapd-metro-cops-join-chp-protecting-kamala-harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Winton verified that LAPD Metropolitan Division officers<\/a> designated for crime suppression had joined the security detail. <\/p>\n<p>The effort was described as \u201ctemporary\u201d by Jennifer Forkish, L.A. police communications director.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly a dozen or more officers have begun working to protect Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Sources not authorized to discuss the details of the plan said the city would fund the security while Harris was hiring her own security in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Controversy ensued<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union that represents rank-and-file LAPD officers, lambasted the move.<\/p>\n<p>The union did not address Harris as a former vice president, nor as California senator or state attorney general, in its official rebuke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPulling police officers from protecting everyday Angelenos to protect a failed presidential candidate who also happens to be a multi-millionaire, with multiple homes and who can easily afford to pay for her own security, is nuts,\u201d its board of directors said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement continued<b>:<\/b> Mayor Karen Bass \u201cshould tell Governor Newsom that if he wants to curry favor with Ms. Harris and her donor base, then he should open up his own wallet because LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s next?<\/p>\n<p>The CHP has not indicated how the LAPD\u2019s move would alter its arrangement with the former vice president or said how long it will continue.<\/p>\n<p>The curtailing of Secret Service protection comes as Harris is going to begin a book tour next month for <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kamala-harris-memoir-107-days-presidential-campaign-88b2b68dc8b9f191d79fc6b582a7828a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her memoir<\/a>, \u201c107 Days.\u201d The tour has 15 stops, which include visits to London and Toronto.
