Former NBA greats Carmelo Anthony<\/a><\/strong> and Dwight Howard<\/a><\/strong> headlined a stellar class that was officially welcomed into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Saturday night, writes Kyle Hightower of The Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"Anthony, who ranks 12th in career scoring with 28,289 points, played for six teams in 19 NBA seasons. The 10-time All-Star was serenaded with \u201cMelo! Melo!\u201d chants as he walked to the podium to deliver his induction speech and teared up as he addressed the crowd.<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight I just don\u2019t step into the Hall of Fame, I carry the echoes of every voice that ever told me I couldn\u2019t,\u201d Anthony said. \u2026 \u201cI had to build a new road. I had to write a new ending.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never got an NBA ring,\u201d he later added. \u201c\u2026 But I know what I gave to the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howard was one of the league\u2019s most dominant big men during his 18-year career, which saw him spend time with seven teams. He paid tribute to other historically great centers, mentioning Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar <\/strong>and Dikembe Mutombo<\/strong>, and referenced his long-running \u201cSuperman feud\u201d with Shaquille O\u2019Neal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The eight-time All-Star wrapped up his speech with a message for his children, telling them, \u201cYou only die once, but you live every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anthony and Howard were also inducted as members of the \u201cRedeem Team,\u201d which reclaimed the gold medal for the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics after settling for the bronze in 2004. All the members of that team were present at the ceremony, except for Kobe Bryant<\/strong>, who died in 2020. Anthony and Howard joined Bryant, Jason Kidd, Dwyane Wade <\/strong>and Chris Bosh<\/strong> as double enshrinees.<\/p>\n

Also inducted on Saturday were former WNBA players Sue Bird<\/a>, Maya Moore<\/a> <\/strong>and Sylvia Fowles<\/a><\/strong>, Bulls coach Billy Donovan<\/strong>, Heat managing general partner Micky Arison<\/strong> and longtime referee Danny Crawford<\/strong>. Arison delivered one of the night\u2019s funniest lines, referencing LeBron James<\/a><\/strong>\u2018 prediction when he teamed up with Bosh and Wade in Miami.<\/p>\n
