Credit: Viktoria Sundqvist<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been almost 24 years since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/series\/1035609660\/911-terror-attacks-anniversary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the terrorist attacks of 9\/11<\/a>, yet more than a thousand victims from that day have never been properly identified.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the hijacked Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 11, 2001, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/history\/famous-cases\/911-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resulted in 2,976 deaths<\/a>. Of those, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctpost.com\/news\/article\/ct-sherwood-island-9-11-memorial-westport-21030302.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">161 victims were from Connecticut<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far, only about 60 percent of the 2,753 remains from the World Trade Center attack have been identified, officials said, leaving 1,653 human remains not yet linked with a name. It is unclear if any of the unidentified remains belong to anyone from Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p>Finding answers for the families who lost loved ones on 9\/11 is an effort some have called <a href=\"https:\/\/nij.ojp.gov\/topics\/articles\/identifying-remains-lessons-learned-911\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cthe greatest forensic challenge ever undertaken in this country.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In August 2025, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in New York <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/ocme\/news\/cm0325\/mayor-adams-chief-medical-examiner-dr-graham-three-new-identifications-world-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced three new identifications<\/a>: Ryan Fitzgerald of Floral Park, N.Y., Barbara Keating of Palm Springs, Calif., and an adult woman whose name is being withheld at the request of family.
