Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n<p>Photos by Lloyd Mitchell, Dean Moses and Ramy Mahmoud<\/p>\n<p>NYC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/nyc-mayors-race-candidates-stories-backgrounds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four leading mayoral candidates<\/a> had a busy Sunday despite the rainy weather, spending time engaging with voters, spotlighting local issues and pushing their campaign messages as the much-anticipated election draws nearer.<\/p>\n<p>Each candidate\u2019s day was packed with activities and speaking engagements that underscored their campaign priorities for New Yorkers throughout the boroughs.<\/p>\n<p>Adams visits churches in Brooklyn<\/p>\n<p>Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/politics\/mayor-adams-keeps-re-election-bid-alive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who vociferously said Friday he was staying in the race to the end<\/a>, despite rumors he was seriously considering a job with the Trump administration \u2014 spent Sept. 7 visiting several churches in Brooklyn, speaking with congregants about various issues. He discussed at Brooklyn\u2019s St. Paul Community Baptist Church the accomplishments he made while in office, focusing many of his remarks on the foster-care system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeel back all the noise, all the constant attacks, peel back all of that and look at what I did in three years and eight months,\u201d he said. \u201cWho\u2019s the majority of those children in foster care? Black and brown. I\u2019m paying the college tuition of foster-care children and giving them a stipend. And they\u2019re not aging out at 18 anymore. I\u2019m giving them life coaches until they\u2019re 21.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he also took to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday to slam his opponents, Queens Assembly Member and Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani and independent candidate and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, calling them \u201cspoiled brats\u201d who come from \u201crich\u201d families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t know the grind of a 9-5, the weight of overdue bills, or the fear of losing a home,\u201d he penned. \u201cI lived it. That\u2019s why I\u2019m going to keep delivering for real New Yorkers, because I AM a real New Yorker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I\u2019m running for reelection and I am going to beat Mamdani. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YrnXvqG13l\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/YrnXvqG13l<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Eric Adams (@ericadamsfornyc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ericadamsfornyc\/status\/1964089488889553398?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September 5, 2025<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani talks childcare, visits church<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Mamdani, the frontrunner and socialist in the race, spent the morning outside City Hall in Lower Manhattan, rallying with local parents to expand universal child care to build on a pilot program recently passed in the city budget to provide hundreds of free seats for children ages 2 and younger. The candidate from Queens said he wants to ensure working families can afford to stay in the city while supporting the push for \u201c2-Care,\u201d universal child care for 2-year-olds in the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs kids head back to school, families across the city are feeling the strain of the crushing child care crisis. What once seemed impossible \u2014 Universal Pre-K \u2014 is now an essential service,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s time to do the same with 2-Care and ensure working families can afford to stay and thrive in our city.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Later, the candidate attended service at the Evangelical Crusade Christian Church in Brooklyn where he was welcomed by the Rev. Pisgah Baptist Church. While delivering remarks at the church, he said his plan would promote innovation and job creation, tackle affordability by eliminating taxes on working families who cannot afford them, and improve public safety by hiring 5,000 additional police officers to\u00a0 restore the department to staffing levels \u201cfirst achieved under [former] Mayor David Dinkins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zeroing in on anti-crime efforts, he said, community and police partnerships can help combat gun and gang violence.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to get police working with those groups, forging partnerships. It won\u2019t work if the community believes the police are the enemy,\u201d the candidate, who has been stepping up his presence on social media, said. \u201cIn the first 100 days, I want every precinct in this city to sit down with the community and come up with a plan to stop gun violence and gang violence. We will get that done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa on subway safety<\/p>\n<p>Curtis Sliwa, the Republican and Independent candidate in the race who campaigns daily in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/mta-cracks-down-fare-evasion-hotspot-in-queens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subway system<\/a>, held a press conference at the 72nd Street subway station focusing on subway attacks, especially against women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa held the conference in response to the brutal attack against a 48-year-old woman in the Union Square subway station on Friday. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/woman-bashed-head-mini-baseball-032100301.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily News<\/a>, the woman was allegedly bashed in the head by a man with a baseball bat after they got into an argument on a northbound 4 train near the station.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137795393\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Subway-campaigning-on-Sep-7-photo-3.jpeg\" alt=\"man in a red beret standing next to two woman outside a train station\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" title=\"Sunday in the NYC Mayor's Race: Adams, Mamdani go to church; Cuomo, Sliwa focus on crime 3\"  \/>Mayoral candidate Curtis Sliway, with his wife next to him, discussed subway safety with a woman outside a train station in Manhattan.Photo by Rusat Ramgopal<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother day, and another attack on women in our subways,\u201d Sliwa said at the event. \u201cLet\u2019s stop this nonsensical talk about who\u2019s dropping out of the race and instead focus on what matters, protecting New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa has made subway safety a major focal point of his campaign.
