shocking Sunday morning incident<\/a>, law enforcement sources told The Post. <\/p>\nPolice said the suspect tried to get into the NYPD\u2019s 73rd Precinct stationhouse in Brownsville through a back door shortly before 5:30 a.m. \u2014 and tried to slash a female cop\u2019s throat when she confronted him.<\/p>\n
Sources said the nut who slashed a Brooklyn cop before he was gunned down was 36-year-old Justin Coleman. Diego Luzuriaga\/FreedomNewsTV<\/p>\n
The unnamed officer was instead cut in the face, with her attacker then running off with cops on his tail.<\/p>\n
Police caught up with him outside a housing project about two blocks away, and opened fire when he refused to drop the 14-inch butcher knife and lunged at cops, officials said. <\/p>\n
The wounded officer, the daughter of a two NYPD detectives \u2014 one retired and one still on the job \u2014 was slashed in the head and left ear, PBA President Patrick Hendry said Sunday. <\/p>\n
\u201cShe could\u2019ve been killed,\u201d Hendry said. \u201cShe knew that he was a danger to the people in this neighborhood, and she didn\u2019t care that she was injured at that point.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wanted to stop the threat, and that\u2019s what she did,\u201d he said. \u201cShe made chase along with the other police officers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police have not officially identified Coleman as the suspect, but law enforcement sources said he was the knife-wielding nut who cut the cop before he was chased and shot dead.<\/p>\n
Coleman\u2019s neighbor, Anthony Patterson, 35,\u00a0called the incident a \u201cvery unfortunate situation on both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s hard, man. We\u2019re neighbors but we live like family \u2026 The guy [Coleman] didn\u2019t bother anybody. He didn\u2019t make any trouble, he didn\u2019t make any fuss. He minded his own business,\u201d Patterson told The Post.
<\/strong>\u201cAnd it\u2019s just a very unfortunate situation on both sides. I saw him probably Saturday, going into the building, minding his business. I\u2019m hurt. There should not be a fatal incident where this is concerned. Mental health has a road to pave, so what are we as a people and the Department doing for that?\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\u201cI feel like I\u2019m the one who got hit. It could have happened to anybody. Nobody\u2019s perfect. You could be born with a certain IQ or you have issues, but that doesn\u2019t mean if you mess up or when you mess up, you deserve death.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Details of Coleman\u2019s 2024 arrest were not available Sunday, and the Brooklyn District Attorney\u2019s Office did not immediately respond to a request for information on the case.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Hendry said seeing the injured officer in the hospital was \u201ctraumatic\u201d for her parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a dangerous environment our police officers are under,\u201d the PBA chief said. \u201cThis is what people feel, that they can just come into the stationhouse and attack a New York City police officer.<\/p>\n
