Hundreds of demonstrators marched through Penn\u2019s campus on Saturday in protest of actions taken by 1968 Wharton graduate and President Donald Trump’s second administration.\n<\/p>\n

The \u201cWe Are America March\u201d began at Philadelphia’s Independence Hall and will march towards Washington D.C. over a span of two weeks, stopping for \u201cshort rallies, mutual-aid projects, and hands-on teach-ins\u201d along the way. The protesters carry a copy of the U.S. Constitution written by children around the country, which they plan to deliver to Congress<\/a> to reaffirm that \u201cthe principles inside are not for sale.\u201d\n\t\t<\/p>\n

After leaving Independence Hall, the Sept. 6 march proceeded toward Penn\u2019s campus up Walnut Street and onto Locust Walk, where it passed the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library. It then continued past the Quad and to Clark Park.\u00a0<\/p>\n

More than 300 people participated in Saturday’s stretch of the march, from Independence Hall to Clark Park according to march organizer Margaret Bohara. Around 50 people will make the full journey from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. according to Bohara.\u00a0\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

Protesters bearing anti-Trump signs broke out into chants, including cries of \u201cSmall hands, small feet, all he does is golf and tweet\u201d and \u201cHey hey, ho ho, Donald Trump has got to go.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

As the marchers reached Penn\u2019s campus, several began chanting, \u201cWe march to D.C. to keep the students free.\u201d\u00a0\n\t<\/p>\n

\u201c[Protesting] is for our freedom of expression. We don\u2019t want to lose it,\u201d one protester \u2014\u00a0who requested anonymity due to fear of retaliation \u2014\u00a0told The Daily Pennsylvanian. \u201cWe\u2019re collectively frogs in the water with the pot turned on boil, [so] people need to stand up. So hopefully this inspires some other people.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

According to Bohara, the movement is not simply a protest of the Trump administration, but of the current federal political environment that has not checked his actions.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll notice that on our website there is not any information about Trump. We wish that he were not president and doing the things he\u2019s doing,\u201d she told the DP, \u201cBut we also believe that there should\u2019ve been people stopping it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIndividuals and organizations definitely should have said, \u2018This is not okay, these are not American values,\u2019 but we didn\u2019t see that happening,\u201d Bohara continued.<\/p>\n

The march will culminate in a Sept. 19 rally on the eastern end of the National Mall, near the U.S. Capitol building.\n\t\t<\/p>\n

“We’re hoping people will remember we have three checks and balances in our system, and that’s how democracy works,” another protester told the DP. \u00a0\n<\/p>\n

At that rally, protesters will teach attendees how to visit their congressperson\u2019s office \u201clegally and respectfully,\u201d Bohara added.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is your right as an American to visit your congresspeople and tell them what they need to do to protect your freedoms,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
