He is currently serving as interim president of the Health Science Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Per Texas law, the board must wait 21 days before officially hiring Calhoun as president.<\/p>\n<p>Calhoun took over as interim president of the Health Science Center in February.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The regents also tapped UNT Dallas interim President Warren von Eschenbach as sole finalist for the permanent presidency of his campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Addressing both finalists\u2019 appointments, Dr. Michael R. Williams, chancellor of UNT System, said the two \u201care values-based leaders who have served a pivotal role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no doubt that they will continue to serve with distinction by fostering academic excellence in innovation, furthering the mission of our institutions, and serving the students and communities entrusted to our care,\u201d Williams said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>The previous president, Sylvia Trent-Adams, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/01\/21\/sylvia-trent-adams-steps-down-as-president-of-health-science-center-in-fort-worth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resigned in January<\/a> more than four months after an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/specials\/dealing-the-dead-2024\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBC News investigation<\/a> into the school\u2019s Willed Body Program revealed failures to contact family members of the deceased, letting their bodies go unclaimed and used for research.<\/p>\n<p>Before coming to the UNT Health Science Center, Calhoun served as president of the University of Texas at Tyler, where he led the opening of a medical school.
