{"id":210176,"date":"2025-09-08T12:28:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T12:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/210176\/"},"modified":"2025-09-08T12:28:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T12:28:12","slug":"how-ohio-universities-are-embracing-artificial-intelligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/210176\/","title":{"rendered":"How Ohio universities are embracing artificial intelligence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>The following <\/b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2025\/09\/08\/how-ohio-universities-are-embracing-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a><b> was originally published in the Ohio Capital Journal and published on News5Cleveland.com under a content-sharing agreement.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>As artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent, Ohio universities are finding ways to responsibly incorporate AI into the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio State University is starting a new artificial intelligence initiative this semester.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lsc.ohio.gov\/assets\/legislation\/136\/hb96\/en0\/files\/hb96-edu-bill-analysis-as-enacted-136th-general-assembly.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio\u2019s two-year operating budget<\/a> requires the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce to adopt a model policy by Dec. 31 on the use of AI in schools and requires K-12 public schools to adopt an AI policy by July 1, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The state budget also created the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lsc.ohio.gov\/assets\/legislation\/136\/hb96\/ph\/files\/hb96-bor-bill-analysis-as-passed-by-the-house-136th-general-assembly.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI Integration in Community Colleges Pilot Program<\/a> which requires the Chancellor of Higher Education to award five $100,000 grants each fiscal year to community colleges, technical colleges and state community colleges to implement AI initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio state Reps. Tex Fischer, R-Boardman, and Steve Demetriou, R-Bainbridge Twp., introduced a bill that would regulate AI systems in the state.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/legislation\/136\/hb392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House Bill 392\u00a0<\/a>defines an artificial intelligence system as \u201cany system that utilizes machine learning or similar technologies to infer from inputs how to produce outputs that affect or influence physical or virtual environments, including content generation, decisions, recommendations, or predictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d like bilingual students, students who know both AI and know the practice and application of that transformative technology in the context of their disciplines and the fields that they came to college to study,\u201d said Ravi V. Bellamkonda, Ohio State\u2019s executive vice president and provost.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s up to each department to decide how to incorporate AI, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not saying you have to use this tool,\u201d Bellamkonda said. \u201cWe\u2019re just saying that you have to have familiarity with and fluency with this tool to see if it\u2019s appropriate to use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 85% of college students have already integrated generative AI into their academic lives, according to a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11528-025-01109-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June 2025 study published in TechTrends<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio State is creating guidelines when it comes to AI and plagiarism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do want curated spaces where they\u2019re allowed to use it because that\u2019s the whole point of the initiative, but it may not be appropriate in every course,\u201d Bellamkonda said. \u201cIt may not be appropriate for every assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Research from <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2506.08872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MIT\u2019s Media Lab\u00a0<\/a>suggests frequently using AI tools could reduce critical thinking skills, especially among younger users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think critical thinking becomes more important in this age of AI because only those people who are really smart in how they engage AI will do really well,\u201d said Gaurav Bansal, chair and O\u2019Bleness Full Professor of Analytics &amp; Information System at Ohio University\u2019s College of Business.<\/p>\n<p>Bellamkonda compared using AI to using a calculator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe use of calculators has not dumbed us down,\u201d he said. \u201cWe found other things to do with our brains. \u2026 Every single time we\u2019ve dealt with technology, we brought value to the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>OU\u2019s College of Business is incorporating more AI-specific courses including a new AI in business graduate certificate and a new AI concentration for their graduate program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we ask the students how you see your future in the age of AI and many of them indicate fear, it talks about job displacement and fear and \u2026 how many jobs will survive in the age of AI,\u201d Bansal said. \u201cOur focus is that we teach students, that they learn how they can augment themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Humans \u201ccan play a very important role in making sure that AI is used, developed, and implemented in an ethical way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The following article was originally published in the Ohio Capital Journal and published on News5Cleveland.com under a content-sharing&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":210177,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[21],"tags":[691,738,6652,1573,32604,32605,158,67,132,68],"class_list":{"0":"post-210176","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-artificial-intelligence","8":"tag-ai","9":"tag-artificial-intelligence","10":"tag-columbus","11":"tag-ohio","12":"tag-ohio-news","13":"tag-state-news","14":"tag-technology","15":"tag-united-states","16":"tag-unitedstates","17":"tag-us"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115168680485499272","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/210176","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=210176"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/210176\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/210177"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=210176"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=210176"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=210176"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
