Australia Post is resuming all US shipping within weeks, after the national delivery service found a way to meet new US tariff rules.<\/p>\n

“While we are planning to lift the temporary suspension on Thursday, September 25, if we are able to lift this earlier, we absolutely will,” Australia Post executive Gary Starr said.<\/p>\n

The government-owned postal service made the extraordinary decision last month to stop delivering many items to the United States in response to the Trump administration ending the so-called “de minimis” exemption on low-value goods entering the country.<\/p>\n

Until August 29, parcels of goods worth less than $US800 ($1,230) were not taxed when they arrived in the US \u2014 an exemption relied upon by many Australian retailers to send items to the US duty-free.<\/p>\n

Australia Post was just one of many global postal carriers thrown into chaos due to not having systems to collect and distribute the new taxes on imported goods.<\/p>\n

It announced on August 26, just days before the end of the de minimis, that it needed to halt most US shipping.<\/p>\n

It also halted shipping to a range of US external territories, including Puerto Rico and Guam.<\/p>\n

Australia Post now says it has a deal with a third-party platform to deal with the taxes, and will resume all shipping by September 25.<\/p>\n

“Along with more than 190 other postal providers internationally, we’ve been caught in a fast-moving situation not of our making,” Mr Starr said.<\/p>\n

“The real impact has been on our customers who export their goods to the US accessing our cost-efficient postal service, so we’ve been working around the clock to find a solution.”<\/p>\n

A wide range of local businesses that use Australia Post to ship items to the US had to stop sending orders there, including fashion brands and Etsy sellers.<\/p>\n

Fashion label Apero pre-empted Australia Post’s suspension of services and halted US orders three weeks ago.<\/p>\n

“We’ve obviously lost revenue but that’s always the case with uncertainty,” Apero co-founder Laz Smith told ABC News.<\/p>\n

“That’s not necessarily Australia Post’s fault. They’ve been trying to get a solution working.”<\/p>\n

Mr Smith is already working with Australia Post’s new third-party platform and expects his fashion brand to turn US orders back on by the end of the month.<\/p>\n

“You can’t use Australia Post now unless you go with Zonos,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s been interesting. We’re making decisions on the fly.<\/p>\n

“At least we’ll have certainty about Black Friday sales now.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
