{"id":2120,"date":"2025-06-21T10:44:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-21T10:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/2120\/"},"modified":"2025-06-21T10:44:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-21T10:44:12","slug":"acf-says-satellite-evidence-shows-mass-native-habitat-destruction-by-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/2120\/","title":{"rendered":"ACF says satellite evidence shows mass native habitat destruction by farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Investigations are under way into a report by a leading conservation group that farmers have illegally cleared thousands of hectares of native bushland across Australia in a few years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) used satellite images and on-the-ground volunteers to document what it says are 90,000 hectares, or 900 square kilometres, of lost bush on 176 properties in NSW, QLD, WA and NT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It says all the sites contained threatened species habitat and the land cleared between 2020 and 2025 equalled an area the size of about 320 Sydney CBDs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ACF business and nature lead, Nathaniel Pelle, said beef production was the primary culprit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Among these 90,000 hectares that we&#8217;ve identified, the majority of it is identifiable as cattle properties,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s all pretty mature bush that is being cleared here \u2026 some of it might be 20-year-old regrowth and that&#8217;s still valuable habitat for species.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The same area a year later, according to the ACF. (Supplied: ACF)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Pelle said federal and state governments had to do more to protect Australia from further deforestation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Unfortunately, federal and state authorities are not properly monitoring or protecting habitat across the country,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It is extremely important that we don&#8217;t allow environmental degradation to continue.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;No-one is more reliant on a healthy environment than farmers and it&#8217;s a real shame that a few cowboys continue to knock down huge swathes of healthy forests.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>NSW confirms investigation<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ACF said the majority of the land clearing was in NSW and Queensland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">State and territory governments are the main bodies responsible for enforcing land management and policing land clearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The NSW government confirmed it received material from the ACF and has launched an investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The department has received and is investigating allegations referred by the ACF,&#8221; said a Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We are unable to comment on cases currently under investigation, as it could impact future legal processes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Queensland&#8217;s Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing, and Regional and Rural Development said it investigated all land clearing allegations, &#8220;including from ACF&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Attack on agriculture&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The National Farmers Federation (NFF) hit back at the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">President David Jochinke said the report was full of holes, anti-agriculture and gave no credence to the hard work farmers undertook to preserve biodiversity and habitats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You tell me how much of that 90,000 hectares is woody weed management \u2026 how much of that 90,000 hectares were legitimately cleared with offsets?&#8221; Mr Jochinke told the NSW Country Hour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This so-called report is just an attack on agriculture, without even any context or knowledge of both what land stewardship is and how agriculture looks after over half of Australia&#8217;s natural environment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Aerial shot of cattle being yarded at Lake Nash station on the QLD NT border.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/f22d23b0bb3f1739333c10ffa871adbf\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The ACF says most of the land clearing was on cattle properties but the NFF says the report lacks context and is anti-agriculture.
