{"id":212918,"date":"2025-09-09T13:35:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T13:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/212918\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T13:35:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T13:35:19","slug":"mission-of-mercy-provides-lifesaving-heat-relief-for-vulnerable-valley-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/212918\/","title":{"rendered":"Mission of Mercy provides lifesaving heat relief for vulnerable Valley families"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the Valley, triple-digit heat can be uncomfortable, dangerous, and even deadly.<\/p>\n<p>For many low-income families, the basics needed to stay safe and healthy are often out of reach.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amissionofmercy.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mission of Mercy Arizona<\/a> provides free medical care to patients across the Valley who often have nowhere else to turn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re managing about 90% of patients here with chronic conditions,\u201d said Paula Carvalho, Executive Director of Mission of Mercy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need ongoing management and care to stay healthy, keep working, and continue caring for their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doctors at the clinic say extreme heat is becoming a growing factor in their patients\u2019 health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have come across a couple of patients with stories about experiencing extreme heat situations at home,\u201d explained Dr. Roselynde Bryant, Assistant Medical Director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been able to help them map out safe places they can go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mission of Mercy\u2019s mobile clinic is a lifeline for those in need, but earlier this summer, the clinic itself was in trouble when its AC unit failed during a stretch of extreme heat.<\/p>\n<p>That is when Americares stepped in with a $6,000 grant to support Mission of Mercy\u2019s Health Action Plan.<\/p>\n<p>The funds helped purchase lifesaving supplies such as fans, hydration kits, cooling towels, and misters. They also aided in the cost of repairing the mobile clinic\u2019s AC unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtreme heat is the number one cause of weather-related mortality in the United States each year,\u201d said Nathaniel Matthews-Trigg with Americares\u2019 Climate and Disaster Resilience team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a real and present danger for communities across the U.S., and especially in Arizona because of how high the temperatures get and how long the heat lasts during the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For patients like Norma Escalante, the support makes all the difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many of us who don\u2019t have insurance, and a lot of people don\u2019t know about this clinic,\u201d Escalante said in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>With these new resources, Mission of Mercy is helping families avoid impossible choices, such as paying for medicine or paying to stay cool.<\/p>\n<p>Mission of Mercy is one of just 20 clinics nationwide chosen for the Americares grant.<\/p>\n<p>Supplies are already being distributed across the Valley, with the goal of keeping more families healthy and out of the ER during Arizona\u2019s hottest months.<\/p>\n<p>        <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc15.com\/apps\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757189113_20_liveplayerbanner1.png\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In the Valley, triple-digit heat can be uncomfortable, dangerous, and even deadly.
