CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) \u2014 Scientists have discovered a gamma ray explosion<\/a> outside our galaxy that\u2019s not only exceptionally powerful, but also long-lasting. <\/p>\n

Telescopes on Earth and in space \u2014 including Hubble<\/a> \u2014 have teamed up to study the unique explosion of high-energy radiation<\/a> first observed in July. Astronomers reported Tuesday it\u2019s unlike anything they\u2019ve witnessed before.<\/p>\n

The repeated bursts of gamma rays were detected over the course of a day, according to scientists. That\u2019s highly unusual since these kinds of bursts normally last just minutes or even milliseconds \u2014 rarely no more than a few hours \u2014 as dying stars collapse or are torn apart by black holes. <\/p>\n

Scientists said such a long and recurrent gamma ray explosion is puzzling \u2014 a cosmic whodunit, at least for now. More observations are needed to confirm its precise whereabouts.<\/p>\n

The European-led team announced its findings in the Astrophysical Journal Letters in August. <\/p>\n
