{"id":213608,"date":"2025-09-09T19:35:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T19:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/213608\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T19:35:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T19:35:16","slug":"cdc-classifies-kissing-bug-disease-endemic-in-u-s-whio-tv-7-and-whio-radio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/213608\/","title":{"rendered":"CDC classifies \u2018kissing bug\u2019 disease endemic in U.S. \u2013 WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">A disease passed by the so-called \u201ckissing bug\u2019 has been declared endemic in the U.S. by the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/31\/9\/24-1700_article#r5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/31\/9\/24-1700_article#r5\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Chagas disease, also called the kissing bug disease, is caused by a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi and is found in the feces of the triatomine bug, or the kissing bug, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/09\/09\/kissing-bug-disease-chagas-endemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/09\/09\/kissing-bug-disease-chagas-endemic\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> reported. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">It gets its name because it bites people\u2019s faces. <\/p>\n<p><b>How does it spread?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">The insect can become infected when it bites a host that carries the parasite and can be spread to humans and animals either when contaminated feces are accidentally rubbed into open wounds, eyes or mouth, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/09\/09\/kissing-bug-disease-chagas-endemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/09\/09\/kissing-bug-disease-chagas-endemic\/\">Post<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">It is rare, but it can also be transmitted from a mother to a child or through contaminated blood transfusions. <\/p>\n<p><b>Where is it found?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Non-imported cases in humans have been found in eight states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas. That means the people got the disease in the U.S., not during international travel, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2025\/09\/08\/kissing-bug-disease-endemic-research\/86038631007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2025\/09\/08\/kissing-bug-disease-endemic-research\/86038631007\/\">USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/31\/9\/24-1700_article#r5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/31\/9\/24-1700_article#r5\">CDC said<\/a> overall, the disease is found in 32 states, mostly in the southern half of the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/https:\/\/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com\/cmg\/3W75QHORHJFHNCKSVYQHP2OZKI.jpg\" width=\"1440\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1htor29-0 jibCgM image-metadata\">Kissing bug disease in the U.S. (CDC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Texas A&amp;M University\u2019s Kissing Bug Community Science program has received about 10,000 reports of the bugs and about 50% of them tested positive for the parasite, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2025\/09\/08\/kissing-bug-disease-endemic-research\/86038631007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2025\/09\/08\/kissing-bug-disease-endemic-research\/86038631007\/\">USA Today<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">It is not known how many people have developed it, since it is not a nationally notifiable disease that doctors report to health departments, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2025\/09\/08\/kissing-bug-disease-endemic-research\/86038631007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2025\/09\/08\/kissing-bug-disease-endemic-research\/86038631007\/\">USA Today<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><b>What are the symptoms of Chagas disease?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">There are two phases of Chagas disease. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">First is the acute phase, which happens in the first few weeks or months after being infected. There may be no symptoms or they may be mild with fever, fatigue, body aches, or eyelid swelling. It is best to get treated during the acute phase. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">If it is not treated, the disease becomes chronic and can cause serious health issues that could lead to heart failure, an enlarged esophagus or an enlarged colon.
