JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (KATV) \u2014 Efforts are underway in Jacksonville to revitalize areas devastated by the March 31 tornado. The city’s Sunnyside neighborhood, among the hardest hit, is witnessing significant changes as part of the renewal initiatives.<\/p>\n
Mayor Jeff Elmore said, “The tornado didn’t spare anything.” He noted that Jacksonville, a city rich in history, saw some of its most historically significant areas suffer severe damage. The Sunnyside area, a historical first development dating back to the early 1940s, was particularly affected.<\/p>\n
Many of the structures in the tornado’s path were aging, with homes not intended to last as long as they have. However, the destruction has provided an opportunity for much-needed development. New buildings, townhomes, duplexes, and single-family homes are emerging, along with new construction in retail corridors.<\/p>\n
Robert Birch, Economic Development Director for the City of Jacksonville emphasized Jacksonville’s unique approach, focusing on building affordable homes and creating inclusive neighborhoods. “You’ve seen areas that have been just taken over and rebuilt these big, massive homes, and then the people that live there had nowhere to go. That’s not what’s going on here,” he said.<\/p>\n
The city has partnered with the Jacksonville Advertising and Promotion Commission to develop the Jacksonville Business Beautification Grant Program, supporting these projects. Burch said, “When you invest back into your city, and your city sees that, then they want to start investing back in themselves.”<\/p>\n
Residents are reportedly excited about the revitalization efforts, and property values are expected to increase, providing a sense of optimism for the community.
