The win against a largely second choice Japan side ended a seven-game winless run for the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Zendejas opened the scoring on the 30-minute mark with a brilliant &#8212; and desperately needed &#8212; finish for the U.S., firing home from the center of the area on a first-time volley from a <a data-player-guid=\"6963bfd1-76af-3432-90a1-82ceb970aced\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/359542\/max-arfsten\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Max Arfsten<\/a> cross.<\/p>\n<p>At the other end of the field, U.S. keeper <a data-player-guid=\"56bd8f73-7610-b0d5-fe90-b517cd9ae61d\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/252974\/matthew-freese\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Freese<\/a> came up big on several occasions to keep the Americans in the lead, with none bigger than his reflex save on <a data-player-guid=\"6f77cb61-e1e0-6773-02a7-cacf1dfd291f\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/219350\/junya-ito\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Junya Ito<\/a>&#8216;s close-range effort shortly before the half.<\/p>\n<p>Zendejas&#8217; goal &#8212; his second in 13 appearances for the U.S. &#8212; ended his 8-game drought for club and country.<\/p>\n<p>Pulisic teed up Balogun for the USMNT&#8217;s second goal, rolling a perfectly weighted through ball behind the Japanese defense for the Monaco striker to run onto and finish from a tight angle.<\/p>\n<p>Pochettino made five changes from the XI that started against South Korea, and the team looked more dynamic and creative throughout the match thanks in large part to the play of Zendejas, Balogun and Pulisic.<\/p>\n<p>Central defender <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/272585\/Chris-Richards\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Richards<\/a>, right back <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/248276\/Alex-Freeman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Freeman<\/a>, midfielder <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/216617\/Cristian-Roldan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cristian Roldan<\/a>, Zendejas and forward Balogun joined the starting lineup in place of Sergi\u00f1o Dest, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/406763\/Diego-Luna\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Diego Luna<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/295771\/Sebastian-Berhalter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sebastian Berhalter<\/a>, Tim Weah and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/256613\/Josh-Sargent\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Sargent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Richards, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/146290\/Tim-Ream\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Ream<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/256476\/Tristan-Blackmon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tristan Blackmon<\/a> started as central defenders in a five-man back line, a formation coach Pochettino switched to in the second half Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Adams and Roldan had not started together since 2018 and Roldan made his first start in 26 months.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. will regroup in October for two more friendlies &#8212; against <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"4defd35b-125e-5760-bf29-7c02b787e68b\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=209\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ecuador<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"e8fb3a42-a3b5-f2c8-ab0d-7b23cd7a6035\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=628\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a> &#8212;
