That\u2019s because Powell views Pratt\u2019s breakout role in Marvel\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/guardians-of-the-galaxy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_guardians-of-the-galaxy\" data-tag=\"guardians-of-the-galaxy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardians of the Galaxy<\/a>\u201d as a turning point when Hollywood became more open to leading men who were \u201ca little more silly and buoyant.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d opened in 2014, the same year Powell had a small supporting role in the action movie \u201cThe Expendables 3.\u201d Powell had been trying and failing for years at that point to hit big in Hollywood. He told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/glen-powell-on-what-makes-a-modern-leading-man?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=dhtwitter&amp;utm_content=app.dashsocial.com%2Fgq%2Flibrary%2Fmedia%2F579697632\" target=\"_blank\">GQ magazine<\/a> in a new cover story that the industry\u2019s preference for \u201cbrooding or dark\u201d types like Christian Bale and \u201cTwilight\u201d-era Robert Pattinson left him on the outs when it came to casting big roles. But Pratt changed things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI remember when Chris Pratt broke out in\u00a0\u2018Guardians of the Galaxy,\u2019\u201d Powell said. \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt it really helped \u2014 not being brooding or dark. Like, I\u2019m not Christian Bale. Christian Bale has a gravitas and a weight, and Pattinson had his thing. And when Pratt kind of appeared on the scene where he was doing things that were a little more silly and buoyant, that\u2019s where I feel most at home. And that\u2019s where I feel like I had a gear that is a necessary flavor in terms of Hollywood, and not a gear that a lot of guys can play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPowell is now one of Hollywood\u2019s hottest leading men. He\u2019s notched box office hits with \u201cAnyone but You\u201d and \u201cTwisters,\u201d and he\u2019s now headlining his first action movie star vehicle with Edgar Wright\u2019s \u201cThe Running Man,\u201d in theaters Nov. 14 from Paramount. When it came to getting in action star mode, Powell was able to call up his mentor and \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d co-star Tom Cruise for guidance. Cruise told him to approach the gig as a physical job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI knew that based on the Stephen King book, [my character] Ben Richards was a tank,\u201d Powell said. \u201cI was like, \u2018Okay, I got to be a bit of a weapon.\u2019 And so that\u2019s why I trained the way I trained on this. I put on a lot of muscle. A lot of it was functional. A lot of it was so I could absorb hits. But a lot of it was also authentically for an audience\u2026 I went from going, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m an actor on a movie,\u2019 to \u2018I\u2019m a high-performance athlete.\u2019\u2009And I\u2019m just very lucky that I have someone like Tom who I could literally go, \u2018Hey, what do I do to survive something?\u2019\u2009<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCruise also helps keep Powell in check. The actor told GQ that \u201cCruise gave me shit\u201d on the \u201cTop Gun\u201d set when he showed up with a mushroom-infused coffee drink. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cYou put ashwagandha and reishi and Cordyceps and all these things in your coffee,\u201d Powell said. \u201cSo I blended it, mixed it up, put it in this kind of a mason jar and brought it to set. I\u2019m flying that day so I\u2019m drinking this thing. But it\u2019s all these ground-up mushrooms\u2014it kind of looks like just this hearty, just disgusting\u2026. [Tom] kind of looks at me for a second, he\u2019s like: \u2018You look like you\u2019re drinking a stool sample.
