{"id":214359,"date":"2025-09-10T02:22:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T02:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/214359\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T02:22:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T02:22:19","slug":"nearly-1-in-3-san-antonio-parks-the-city-is-looking-to-cut-some-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/214359\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly 1 in 3 San Antonio Parks &#038; Rec classes have no one in them; the city is looking to cut some"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 Low-attendance classes offered by the San Antonio Parks &amp; Recreation Department are on the budget chopping block as the city tries to close a looming deficit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The department offers a variety of classes at community centers, adult and senior centers and city parks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The classes include everything from tai chi to making flowers out of pipe cleaners. On its website, the city <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sa.gov\/Directory\/Departments\/Parks\/Programs-Classes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sa.gov\/Directory\/Departments\/Parks\/Programs-Classes\">advertises<\/a> art, dance, fitness, martial arts, music, nature and science, sports, and aquatics programs and classes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A review of the nearly 79,000 classes it offered in the 2024 fiscal year found 32% of the classes had no one participating in them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Now, the department said it plans to save close to $624,000 by eliminating classes led by temporary staff members that have zero participants. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI think one of the highest ones was art,\u201c Director of Parks and Recreation Homer Garcia III told KSAT. \u201dAnd so, of the total classes being reduced, the bulk of those are in the community centers, not \u2018Fitness in the Park.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Garcia said the city would still have \u201ca spectrum and a palette that the community wants to participate in, based on that data-driven approach to where are they interested in doing.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">What we will be eliminating is just the quantity of those offerings,&#8221; Garcia said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">KSAT attended an interval training class on Tuesday at the Enrique M. Barrera Community Fitness Center on the West Side. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One of the nine attendees, Bertha Sanchez, said between interval training, cardio fit, and Zumba, she goes to five or six Parks &amp; Rec classes every week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI love the instructors,\u201d Sanchez said. \u201cThey push you. You can go heavier. You can do this and that. The friends, the peers. They push you. They motivate you.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Sanchez said she has also attended classes where she has been the only one there and heard from instructors about classes where nobody shows up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">&#8220;Classes far away, like yoga classes, where there\u2019s nobody there,\u201c Sanchez said. \u201dParks that are way out there in the North Side or somewhere.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Though Garcia said there were some smaller fitness classes with no one in attendance, he said the bulk was at the community centers, where the model of \u201cprogramming every available space, every hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cSo, when the community would come in \u2014 kids primarily \u2014 choosing which class they want to be in, a lot of them gravitated to some more than others,\u201c Garcia said. \u201dAnd so, we focused the reduction on where there was zero attendance.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Though the cuts to class offerings comes during a budget crunch, with the city trying to cover a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/08\/14\/facing-deficit-concerns-san-antonio-city-council-to-discuss-draft-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/08\/14\/facing-deficit-concerns-san-antonio-city-council-to-discuss-draft-budget\/\">nearly $173 million shortfall<\/a> in its primary operating fund over the next two years, Garcia said that\u2019s not the only thing driving the change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The issue was brought up during a comprehensive budget review process. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Garcia said he thinks \u201cit\u2019s more focused on just being innovative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019re still providing classes focused on quality, not quantity, while at the same time expanding access to our community centers,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">During a budget work session on Tuesday, Garcia told council members the department also plans to increase the 19 community centers\u2019 hours. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The city council is scheduled to vote on a final city budget on Sept. 18.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>More recent City Hall coverage on KSAT: <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2025 by KSAT &#8211;
