The bridge, which connects Eakins Oval and Martin Luther King Drive, will open for recreational use over the weekend and will open to cars starting at 7 a.m. Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Built in 1965, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/mlk-drive-bridge-closed-until-spring-2025-for-repairs\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bridge closed to cars in 2021<\/a> when a part of the steel framing was found to have deteriorated, and it has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/documents\/martin-luther-king-jr-drive-bridge-rehabilitation-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">closed to foot traffic since March 2023<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mlk-bridge-chopper.jpg#.jpeg\" alt=\"Chopper 3 image of the MLK Bridge in Philadelphia, a few work vehicles and lights are on the bridge \" height=\"349\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                CBS News Philadelphia<\/p>\n<p>The project has forced drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to take detours to get from the Art Museum area to Martin Luther King Drive along the west side of the Schuylkill River.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The $20.1 million construction project was fully funded with federal money, according to the city. The rehabilitation was initially slated for completion by spring 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Structural elements of the bridge were repaired, and the concrete bridge deck was widened.
